Hi, looking for a bit of advice on a journey.

Leaving Cambridge after 17.00 on 12 Feb and returning back on 21 Feb leaving Stalybridge after 11.00.

I've found an advance fare with Virgin at £29.50, leaving Cambridge for Finsbury Park at 19.24 and then getting the 21:00 Euston - Manchester Piccadilly.

This arrives ten minutes before the last service to Stalybridge departs. Will Virgin cover the cost of a taxi to Stalybridge if the Euston departure misses the connection?

Returning back, I've not managed to find any advance fare combinations that work out cheaper than an off-peak single at £41.85.

Is anyone able to improve on this?

Try via East Coast, splitting the journey at Huddersfield

For your outward journey £11.15 gets you an Advance Single Cambridge-Huddersfield:

1839 Cambridge
1855 Ely

1901 Ely
1942 Peterborough

1953 Peterborough
2113 Wakefield Westgate

2129 Wakefield Westgate
2205 Huddersfield

£10.30 then gets you an Off Peak Return to Stalybridge

2226 Huddersfield
2243 Stalybridge

(And there are two further services should you be delayed on the East Coast; when EC services miss the Northern connection at Wakefield Westgate, passengers are advised to stay on board to connect with First TPE at Leeds)

I'll let you look up the return options from Huddersfield to Cambridge

Thanks for that, not considered the Huddersfield option. It's a bit more reassuring that there are three connections from Huddersfield due after the scheduled arrival too.
