Hi All,
This morning my train was stopped at a red signal, but then the driver got out went to the signal got back in his cab and we proceeded through the red at about 30mph until the next which was green but he stopped and repeated the process until he got into his cab and we continued at linespeed.

What was going on?

He had probably been authorised to pass signal W43 at danger however to report back to the signaller at end of the section.

No reason has been logged for the delay so I can't help any longer. Left Taunton ontime, Westbury 25 late, Reading 30 late, arrival Paddington 24 late.

The Rule Book, Module S5 "Passing a signal at danger"

f) Next stop signal

If you can see that the next stop signal ahead is displaying a proceed aspect, you must not assume the line ahead is clear for your train.

(This is because the signal might have been cleared for a train ahead that is near to the signal and which you cannot see.)

It's more likely you were held for a track circuit failure (or similar) and the driver was told to pass the signal at danger, examine the line and report back at the next signal.

There was a track circuit failure meaning the signal your train was stopped at, signal W43 could not be cleared. As your train was the first train through it had to examine the line to check the line was not blocked, and the track circuit showing occupied because of that. The driver would then have to stop at the next signal to tell the signaller that the line was clear.

It happens quite often but as a lot of areas have CSR the driver doesnt have to leave the cab to contact the siggy so passengers dont realise, the clue is when the driver sounds the horn as he passes the red.

And as GSM-R is rolled out nationwide there should be even less need to use the SPT.

Oh, here there and anywhere
I would be surprised if he was examining the line at 30 mph. If this was the case he should only proceed at extreme caution at a speed he can see the line to be clear and to be able to stop within that distance. I personally think the signaller told him to contact him at the next spt to make sure he was clear of the section. Happens all the time tbh.

30 should be fine to proceed past a signal at danger and examine the line, if it's a good long straight bit of track with good weather/visibility then 50 or so is fine if you feel you can stop the train if you see an obstruction. There are no speeds written down for caution.

The train the OP was on was the first through after the failure and had been instructed to examine the line.

That looks a newish LED signal, the SPT position appears to be low down which is a dreadful position. What happened to the walkway and SPT at a reasonable height?

GSM-R is fitted on the FGW HSTs although the infrastructure down there is not live yet. It will be over the course of the next few months.

Lots of masts up all over the FGW network as well, some have been up for a couple of years now.

Very true, but it all depends what the signaller has asked the driver to look out for, if its a possible broken rail then very slow indeed thank you, if the signaller tells you what the problem is then you can go a bit quicker.
