Can you break a journey on the non-booked portion of your advance?

I remember a year or two ago not being permitted to break a Watford High Street to Carlisle journey at Wembley Central, with the only booked train being from Euston. Being unsure who was in the right, I didn't press the point (although it did occur to me later I should have insisted on making an on foot change to the Northern Line). Who was correct?

Leaving aside the ticket not being valid via the Underground, how do you get from Wembley Central on foot to the Northern Line?

It would have been permitted had they allowed it, but otherwise no.

It's around 4 and a half miles to somewhere like Hendon so it is walkable if you have the time and ability, though not exactly what i would call a reasonable route.

In practical terms its going to be possible to do with a number of journeys (for a break of a few hours), especially with ones that involve something like a cross London transfer.

I tend to leave (if I can) a reasonable time between cross London transfers to allow for train delays etc, so this allows me a leisurely lunch/tea/meal as I'm travelling between the 2 stations - I suppose thats technically a break. Though equally sometimes I just cross London, and if I have a First class ticket I would use the first lounge
