Can you buy West Midlands Day Rangers from London Midland ticket machines or online in advance?

Don't think you can, and neither can you buy it off a train manager/conductor, their machines do not carry the info to issue it.....You can buy it at any station ticket office for up to a week or so in advance( the issuing machine puts a letter 'a' after the date..)

You should be able to purchase on-board a train. The machines have details of ALL rail rovers and rangers.

If you board at an unstaffed station you can buy the ticket from the guard/TTI on the train. If not then you can only buy it from a staffed station booking office.
