Cancelled seat reservations on Virgin

I have just been on Twitter and seen many people not very happy with Virgin Trains yesterday as it would seem that all seat reservations out of at least Euston were cancelled turning it into who could get to a seat first!

Now assuming that this was the case why on earth would a TOC want to upset so many people by doing this when the trains are busy and set up potential confrontations as one person mentioned about?

I thought that myself but one person tweeted that Virgin are not telling people but reservations are cancelled for what was yesterday. Very odd if they just took it upon themselves.

If the electronic system fails btw are Virgin still able to revert to the paper system?

They do put them in though, it the space between the frame and cushion.
