Just out of curiosity, if you were to travel somewhere for the day, and you were booked on to the last train home, which was cancelled at the last minute, does the rail company need to get you home, even if the journey is 200 miles in a taxi, for example?
What do they have to do by law?
Surely they cannot just abandon you can they?

Officially they have to get you home or find accommodation if either is possible. As with many things the definition of possible is subjective and its sometimes interpreted by the company to their benefit. If trains are cancelled before 10pm the night before many companies won't consider them to be in the timetable. My advice is practical. Others will advise based on letter of law. In practice it could be a difficult situation, the outcome may differ from company to company and relying on last train of night may be unwise. I've had good experience with swr and gwr but not southeastern!

Presumably if you are booked on the last train of the day you are in line for maximal delay repay whatever the train company wants to say about the rest?

Assuming it is a return journey then it refunds the full return journey?

Never known anyone to be totally abandoned. A taxi or some alternative will always be offered.

Obviously if possible of course. All avenues will be explored.

I have been told I will be abandoned by the toc who caused a delay causing missed last of night yet the second toc who hadn't caused delay but whose train was missed sorted it all out. I'd just be a bit cautious

i posted about the sister in law going to Newquay from stoke on 9th sept. as of the uncertenty she booked on National Express, that did not go well. A lady in the customer services at Birmingham mentioned a longish wait at Plymouth, but there was a train!
So she caught the 1927 train to Penzance, to change at Par 2019 for the 2027 to Newquay, but due to problems she arrived at Par 2031 or so, the TM had announced that the Par - Newquay train had been canx, so anyone for it should stay on the train to St.Austall where a coach would be provided...
So a shout out for the TM and any others involved, in organising this, although this would be expected, as we know expectancy does not always come into it.

Not through strike action but I have certainly been abandoned with a last train being cancelled and no one to be seen on the station.
