I've really no idea how they managed this.

The BBC report has a helpful caption stating that "Cars are being diverted around the train at Stirling Station".
The mind boggles!

Full report at:
Two people have been taken to hospital after a car landed on the tracks at Stirling railway station.
A car crashed through the station's wire fence before coming to a stop on the line at about 12:15.

Photographs of the scene at Stirling station show the dark coloured car sitting across the tracks, a short distance from a ScotRail train.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said two people were taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert.

British Transport Police (BTP) said there were no serious injuries and no one had been arrested.

There’s a car park next to the platform so my guess is either a forgotten handbrake (and the driver is returning to a nasty surprise), or another case of mixing up the middle and right pedals.

The doors being open might rule out the former.

Edit: StreetView link to the location showing the car park relative to the railway.

I do find it strange how there were two of the same incidents on the Scotrail network within minutes of each other.

Fort William and at Stirling... strange coincidence?

Only if you believe in coincidence. Assuming the picture to be genuine it doesn't seem to me to be accidental.

The picture is genuine. There are others of the scene. And why would Scotrail put a Photoshopped photo on their Twitter feed?

RTT shows only Platforms 6 & 9 being used from 1220 onwards which confirms the credibility of this report.

Wonder if there's any CCTV footage?

Photos on Twitter show car went through fence and skidmarks similar to those made under hard accelleration.

Perhaps another case of someone with an automatic putting it into Drive instead of Reverse?

Must've been deliberate one would think? They are fairly sturdy fences and pictures of the break in the fence show another car next to the gap and a planter on the platform both unscathed so the driver must've driven around the objects.

You couldn't really call it "an accident".

Around 30 years ago RoSPA had a stand at the motor show with a car seat on a ramp that hit a sudden stop at 5mph. I had a go and was surprised how keen that felt when I was stopped by the seat belts at such a modest speed.
So anyone in this one must've got a hell of a jolt when it landed.

It seems very suspect, it's quite a tight gap:

Absolutely! Not hitting either that fence post or the car next to it is quite an achievement and the marks on the ground suggest quite a bit of speed.

The tyre tracks suggest that it was from acceleration, rather than just travelling fast. I think it was probably from someone who pressed hard on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal.

I agree it's from heavy acceleration, but the clearances look very tight to have missed the next car which overlaps the fence section taken out AND the planter on the platform unless they had the presence of mind to steer around the objects inspite of the stressful situation?

That's what I can't quite get

An update to the BBC Website (timed as 1 Hour ago) says that 2 people have been taken to hospital.
Also, the misleading caption has now been corrected.

When something like this happens, which blocks a number of lines and could cause a serious accident if a train was to hit it, presumable there is a way for drivers and platform staff to communicate to the signaller 'set all signals near me to red urgently'?

Yes, the GSMR emergency button

While not wanting to speculate. Seeing the tail end of the HST at the Platform I get the impression that this mishap could well have been only a couple of minutes from being catastrophic regardless of how quickly anyone was able to react.

I think it was the 1214 to Dundee, which arrived six minutes early

Platform staff don’t have access to GSMR but most staffed stations will have an direct telephone line to the supervising signalbox / signalling centre other than that it’s using the internal railway telephone network.
