Apparently the car was involved in a police pursuit and drove up onto the platform, and three arrests were made.

Edit: http://www.manchestereveningnews.co...ews/car-crashes-metrolink-stop-after-11007214

Manchester Evening News said:
Three people have been arrested following the crash at the New Islington stop in north Manchester

Tram services have been disrupted after a car was driven onto tracks at a Metrolink station near the city centre following a police pursuit.

The car appears to have been driven onto the platform and then became wedged at the New Islington tram stop.

Police confirmed three people have been arrested.

As a result services are severely disrupted on the Ashton line.

There are currently no trams running between Manchester Piccadilly and Clayton Hall.

Instead passengers can go from Rochdale to Manchester Piccadilly, from Altrincham to Manchester Piccadilly and from Ashton to Clayton Hall.

Whats interesting in this pic is that they have appeared to kept the opposite line open before they have removed the car.

Why not? The car is clearly not foul of the other line and is not likely to slip from that position. With a fair bit of shuffling at Piccadilly (and probably police to control the unsignalled crossing of Sheffield Street) they can get trams onto the wrong line to provide a service on the outer part of the Ashton route. The tram won't be in passenger service here unless it's caught up in the initial incident.

Probably they would remove the car after that service was instituted, when there would be no need to run trams past New Islington until they returned to depot later in the day.

Because it would surely be safer to remove the car first just in case it does slip from its position.

1 tonne car, 40 tonne tram little acceleration. All it would be capable of if it did slip would be a slight dent in the body panels.

Yes I get all that but its still safer to remove any obstacle which could cause a problem

Brings a new meaning to the "service now arrived at platform 1 is a one car service";)

Fortunately only the people in the car were injured & they were the ones that nicked it so reap what they sow, luckily there wasn't any passengers on the platform in the way of the car.

The double set that you see in the left of the picture had (probably) stopped on seeing the vehicle and pursuit passing and with the huge crash/flying vehicle behind rang it in. The DC OHL power was (probably) subsequently turned off stranding the unit at the Munday St junction.

Probably (:P)

looking at the gallery in the link, it looks like one platform is open, as units appear/disappear
