Hello everyone,

I am doing a dissertation about Cardiff Central Station and I need to know the energy consumption of the electric line and signaling as well as Cardiff Central Station building but I can not find it anywhere. If someone knew where I could find this information or who I could contact to get this information I would really appreciate it.

Thank you very much.

I don’t know the answers to your questions.

But to give you an idea of the power requirements of a signalling system. The old Bristol Panel (PSB) before TVSC took control of most of the area, consumed about 48kW for the Bristol area signalling. Not including the satellite power feeds such as Bathampton Junction.

Currently the 25kV overhead electrification is only being used by the GWR services to/from London. Those are generally formed of 9 coach class 800/3 units, or two 5 coach class 800/0 units coupled together.

This document by Hitachi sets out that each motor coach has four 226kW motors. A 5 coach 800/0 has 3 motor coaches, so a double 800/0 has 6 motor coaches for a total of 5.4MW at-rail power. A 9 coach 800/3 has 5 motor coaches, so a total of 4.5MW at rail power.

Now these figures can't be taken in isolation - obviously trains will generally not be drawing full power all of the time, however equally the power consumption will be more than just the motors (although the motors will make up the lion's share). Allow, say, an additional 10-20% for hotel loads therefore. Also perhaps another 5-10% for losses through the entire OLE process.

It's then a question of the timetable as to how many sets will be in, or near, Cardiff at any given time.

The consumption of the electric line? If you mean the electric trains, they were built by Hitachi and you should be able to get some info as to their total installed power.
I don't know how you would translate that into power consumption at Cardiff Central though...
Edit: Watershed has beaten me to it.
