I have to travel Carlisle - Newcastle return this coming Monday, 15th October. I'll be using the:
    • 1046 Out (CAR - NCL)
    • 1810 Return (NCL - CAR)
Does anyone know what stock usually operates these services? Am I likely to get a 156, 158, 150? Or will I be subjected to Pacer purgatory?

    Thanks,
    M

Pacer Purgatory as you put it, sometimes a 156.

Should be a 156 on both.

Not since the May timetable change thankfully, 142s are now usually confined to one return working between Newcastle and Carlisle, just about everything else is 156s now.

Must have just been unlucky these past few days at Carlisle then!

Which services have produced 142s on Newcastle - Carlisle in the past few days? Should just be the 12:15 NCL - CAR and 13:46 return now...

I've seen them parked up in the Newcastle-bound bay at Carlisle about two or three times on Wednesday (2 visits to Carlisle) and one at the start of this month. The time does corroborate with most of the visits though

They can occasionally appear on other services but thankfully that's rare these days, I think you must have been unlucky!

Thanks both. Sounds like, all being well, I'll be lucky and get a 156. Happy days :)

I catch the 0630 off Carlisle at least once a week, and it’s nearly always a 142!

The only certainty is that it won't be either a Class 150 or 158.
Class 158 used to work some Carlisle - Newcastle trains until the Newcastle (Heaton) allocation were all given to Trans Pennine -- and may well reappear in a year or two.

I don't think that Class 150 has worked in the Carlisle or Newcastle areas (in passenger service) (well not since the end of Regional Railways; did any 150s reach Newcastle when RR first put dmus on Trans Pennine services ? (They definitely did Liverpool/N. Wales to York / Scarborough / Hull.) )

Having done some more research I think I've established the following to be booked a 142 on the Tyne Valley west of Hexham Mondays to Fridays:
    06:30 Carlisle - Morpeth
    12:16 Newcastle - Carlisle
    13:46 Carlisle - Newcastle
    21:00 Morpeth - Carlisle (dep Newcastle 21:23)

Can't guarantee that 142s won't appear on any other services west of Hexham, however the other services are usually worked 156s these days.

Some services between Newcastle and Carlisle will eventually become Northern Connect services, using 158s iirc.

Just for reference, in the end it was a 142 out and a 156 return.

Yeah, I know. Sadly it was a work thing I had to do on Monday.
We did achieve some spectacular wheel spin leaving Bardon Mill though, which was interesting to say the least.
