I've previously (a few years ago) seen Arriva Trains Wales advertise for temporary/casual staff to work in customer-facing roles during times of disruption (whether planned or unexpected).

Do any other TOCs do anything similar?

Only ever seen ATW advertise. I know someone who got the job and there was simply no work - think she did three weekends for them in all, the cost of train travel from North Wales to their interview in Chester was hardly covered by the first day's wages.
