I've heard a rumour that the rail route between Chamonix and Geneva is to be upgraded by 2016.

It currently takes over 3 hours changing at Martigny and Vallorcine. soit quicker to take the SAT bus which takes 2 hours (incl 20 mins to go via Geneva Airport)

Has anyone heard about this upgrade, what is planned etc?

ah,

have found out a bit about this project,

Coppet – Genève – Annemasse – Annecy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CEVA_rail
AND
http://195.15.24.5/CEVA/menu/ceva_en_bref
Explain the Swiss part of the project in detail.

I Haven't managed to find out much about SNCF commitment from the Swiss border to Chamonix and Annecy

Most of the articles I have seen seem to focus on the "shunt" curve at Annemasse and the fact that this will allow direct TERs to Geneva and TGVs from St. Gervais to Paris via Geneva.
This website has some interesting information about this: http://agfut-dtc.74.over-blog.com/article-tgv-et-le-ceva-futur-reseau-rer-97788520.html
It also mentions a time saving of 38 minutes for journeys to Paris on a possible new TGV if the line is doubled "from St. Gervais" (presumably to Geneva).
