The Railway Benefit Fund are holding a new charity auction in collaboration with Portebrook. They are offering up to 10 people a trip aboard HydroFLEX, Britain’s first hydrogen powered train.

The HydroFLEX project is a ground-breaking partnership between the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education and railway rolling stock company, Porterbrook. A UK first, it demonstrates how hydrogen could be deployed across the rail network to offer a cleaner alternative to current diesel trains.

On a technicality, that would be Britain's first main line or standard gauge hydrogen train. A hydrogen-powered miniature railway sized locomotive has been demonstrated for a few years now.

I assume that each bid is for all 10 tickets? If that is the case, the current price of £52 for a trundle around on a 319 does seem rather steep!

Hope they do manage to raise some money for a good cause though
