Just bought a super off peak return from Nottingham to Romford, a nostalgic visit to my old home town.
The ticket has me changing at Liverpool Street via the tube from St. Pancras. Can I change at Stratford instead with this ticket, there used to be an across platform change from the Central line, back in the day? (I used to work at Stratford Loco in the 1970's so Stratford Stn. another nostalgic place I would like a glimpse of, much changed no doubt!) :D

Yes, you can. You'll have been given the quickest itinerary but that doesn't mean you have to stick to it with a flexible ticket.

"Quickest" according to the data, perhaps.

But in practice, the cross-platform connection at Stratford is almost always going to be a better option than changing at Liverpool St, even if the Central Line is a little slower (and a lot noisier!) between Liverpool St and Stratford.

On the other hand, there's an extra change on the underground which doesn't suit everyone. Time isn't always the key factor.

Be prepared for a shock. Good luck in finding anything left of Stratford Loco, apart from the plaque in the International station at the DLR end. I’d still catch the train from Liverpool St as the whole area from Bow Jn to Stratford has changed out of recognition, you won’t see that from the Central line tunnel. It’s also one tube train instead of two.

Romford station is being rebuilt, with lifts going in at the moment. The market still operates Wed, Fri, Sat, but you’ll see a few other changes. Look out for the brewery chimney as you approach Romford, the only bit left. Enjoy the nostalgia.

If going to St Pancakes there is also a cross platform interchange at Mile End onto the Hammersmith & City line. No need to traipse upstairs at Liverpool Street

Very true regarding Mile End, although it is hardly a traipse upstairs at Liverpool St from the eastbound H&C to the main line station, it’s about half a dozen steps straight onto the main concourse.

That's true. But I meant when getting the Central line from Stratford towards St Pancras

Thanks to all for the replies.
Main issue was to check ticket validity on different tube route, and to see if Stratford had that same cross platform connection with Central Line.
I gather most of the Stratford Loco and Temple Mills vanished under the Olympic stuff in that area?
Sad to hear that Romford Station is undergoing alterations. Good for those that need lifts, of course.
I discovered that my old school, North Romford Comprehensive was completely demolished, despite being a relativly new school.
Good that the market still continues, I remember seeing farm animals being sold there in my childhood. I expect the magistrates court still exists. (Don't ask...;) ).

Temple Mills area, although much changed and smaller, now has the Eurostar depot and Orient Way carriage sidings. A short detour from Stratford to Tottenham Hale if you’ve time will show all that (could get the Victoria line back from Tottenham Hale to Kings Cross at additional cost). Thornton Fields sidings however did disappear under the Olympic stuff, although the bridge to get there remains as part of the Olympic park. The big scary dog has gone fortunately.

I decided to change at Liverpool Street after all, thanks for all the tips.
I belong to a usa railfan site, and post some short trip reports there, if anyone is interested?

I arrived into Stratford on a TfL Rail train, cross platform Interchange onto the Central Line to Mile End, for another cross platform Interchange onto the H&C to Kings Cross. I'll have to remember that one in future!

The only issue with changing at Mile End for Kings Cross is that the Hammersmith & City is normally only one train every 10 minutes. And you know your luck that a Hammersmith train would have closed the doors just as a central line train rolls in.
