Two of us have Advance tickets from Euston to Preston for Monday 16th April, one full fare, one YP. We may need to travel north sooner, so the question is could it be changed to an SVH or is a full Off Peak Single the only option?

Time of day is not critical, neither is the route so suggestions for split single tickets would be appreciated even if it means giving up the original tickets.

Do Virgin offer the chance to change these tickets online? Unless they've added it recently, I think they don't. In which case I don't see how you can change it to 'SVH' as this is, as far as I know, an online only product.

(In case anyone is wondering, the ticket code SVH used to be called Saver Half, and SVS was Saver Single, the SVH being around half the price of the SVS. This has been "simplified" and both are now called Off Peak Single. But one of them (the SVH) is only available online, and not singly, despite being called a Single. This is, in ATOC-speak, an example of "Simple" ticketing).

That depends on whether you have an Advance ticket for a journey in the opposite direction and where you bought the ticket.

If you bought the advance online and have an advance for travel in the opposite direction you should be able to change it for an Off-Peak Day Single (SVH).

If you bought it at the station and have a ticket for travel in the opposite direction that you have not used, you can change it for an Off-Peak Single (SVS), but, depending on the knowledge of the clerk, you could change both directions for an Off-Peak Return (SVR) which may be cheaper for you.

If you bought at a station or online and do not have, or do not want, a return journey you can change to an Off-Peak Single (SVS).

In all cases you will incur an admin fee of £10 per ticket changed.

You can change train times, before the day of travel, to another Advance fare if they are available. This may be cheaper than changing to any of the off-peak fares, although you will still have an admin charge and you will still have to follow the restrictions of the Advance ticket. You will not get a cheaper Advance than you have already.

IF time isn't of the essence to you but solely saving £££ then there's the potential to combine London Midland's SALE to get from London Euston to Crewe [see the SALE section on their site]
Advance Singles For Adult + YPerson = from £6.65 direct service, but typically takes 2h52m to wend its way North.

Would then cost you say another £34.05 for Anytime Singles to go on to Preston for around 42mins every hour.

So £41+ for the two of you to get there, though probably taking almost twice as long as a direct Virgin.

These Anytime Singles between Crewe and Preston Lancs are terrible value for money and the OP should be looking at using something like Stockport - Lancaster instead (valid via Crewe).

Thanks for the responses. I booked the return trip as 4 Advance tickets through RedSpottedHanky. I've since found the facility to amend tickets on their site, where as HHF says, it's cheaper to change to another Advance ticket + £10 per person admin fee. There are currently still tickets at the same fare but we may be deciding at the last minute what to do. I was thinking about LM to Stoke then home via Manchester as another possibility.
