Suppose I was to go into the Midlands, or perhaps even further south, from Stockport. Are there any stations which are quite cheap to get to?

Might be worth looking Advance fares from Crewe to stations in the West Midlands served by LNR as XC don't usually seem to have many cheap advance tickets.

How far are you wanting to travel? Direct trains or not? There and back the same day?

West Midlands Day Ranger at £28-80, if still available, might be the ticket.

Could get to Northampton via Rugby, Shrewsbury via Wolverhampton, Stratford upon Avon via Birmingham or Leamington, or Hereford via Worcester.

Just need an additional ticket from Stockport to Crewe or Stoke-on-Trent to enter the boundary of the West Midlands Day Ranger. Prices vary, depending on TOC used, route taken, maybe an extra £15-00 or so.

Manchester to London Euston using TfW and WMT/LNR only is good value at £35 for a Super Off Peak Return and can be purchased on the day of travel. You can start short at Stockport.

Do check the timetable and time restrictions.

Dead simple time restrictions in this case - I though they'd use the complex LNR codes with the unimplementable "a connecting service may be used to complete a journey begun at a valid time" but they don't.

Not valid on trains timed to depart Manchester Piccadilly after 04:29 or before 10:30 and not between 16:00 to 19:00.

Not valid on trains timed to depart London Euston after 04:29 or before 10:30 and not between 16:00 to 19:00.

Beware that like most LNR Super Off Peaks this ticket is an OPR not a SSR (simple, anyone? :) ), which implements break of journey restriction on the outward at ticket type level, which means you can't start short at Stockport. However, as I think the OP is riding for fun anyway a run to Picc and back may not be entirely undesirable, and you can always ask staff at the barrier/before boarding and if they refuse you just go back to Picc.
