So I'm travelling to Blackpool North from Leyland later today and I see that there is First Class from Preston to Blackpool North. A quick look on brfares suggests that an SDR is £4.55 (my ticket). However I also see that the FDS is £5.15 (FDR £10.30). Would it be possible to excess my ticket to first class, but one section at a time (65p each way), to save £4.05? It sounds possible but such an obvious loophole and I want to be sure.

Thanks guys.

No, that is not possible.

To upgrade in one direction only, you add together the price of a standard single and the price of a 1st class single, and then deduct what you have already paid, to work out the cost of the upgrade.

However, if the difference in price between a 1st class return and a standard class return is less than the cost just worked out, you pay that smaller difference.
