Howdy,

I'm currently looking for a cheap (Sub £150) machine to run Ubuntu on.

I don't need a monitor etc, just the main tower, preferably one of similar size to the Dell Optiplex so I can run basic Ubuntu and manage to fit it into the space under my Office Desk...

Any ideas where I can aquire a machine like this, apart from eBay, I don't mind buying from Business.

try your local computer shop-- I bought a 2.2GHZ WinXP 100GB machine for £99 - no extras like a monitor- I chose to add a wireless keyboard and mouse - they discounted and refunded wire mouse/keyboard...

Trouble is that sadly those shops come and go. The good one in Flexistone went out of business.

The problem is that the little shops can't compete with the highstreet names like PC World, Dixons, Dell etc when it comes to the normal customer, yet their core market, the more knowlegable and specialised user, is looking more to the internet to buy their computers and bits these days. Where I like we don't have a single thing that could be called a computer shop within miles. Ok, we have the big electrical shops, that also sell computers, but they are rarely any good for less than a full package, buying bits to make your own, or even buying the tower is not an option. Then again, the small computer shop we did have wasn't that cheap, the owner was a miserable git (although he knew his stuff), and was small to the point where it didn't have that much variety, so isn't a dramatic loss. The nearest decent computer shop is well over 10miles away, although there is a Maplins a little closer that I find is good for parts.

There used to be a cracking computer shop in Ashton, where the owner seemed to know anything you needed to know about computers. He was also friendly. Unfortunately, he sold up a few years back, and sold it to a Asian guy, who seems more interested in somthing else, with the computer shop a disguise for other large transactions, as he has been raided by the boys in blue at least twice, for drugs related crimes.

En consideration, I've decided to build me new machine for XP and use me current machine for Linux, question is, what equipment can I get sub-£400 based around an Intel Pentium D 945 processor to give me a machine that will last well through University?. (Check out Intel for specs)
