Ten pence dearer for a return journey as opposed to the single price. What's the furthest you can get for the least amount of money? Just over 2 and a half miles for a penny. At that rate it's Manchester to London for a quid.
There might be a more extreme example when calculated in terms of p/mile, but most long distance flows are priced with Off-Peak Single fares costing £1 (or thereabouts) less than the equivalent Off-Peak Return. So something like Wick to Penzance where an Off-Peak Return route Any Permitted is £272.10 but the equivalent Anytime Single (there isn't an Off-Peak Single on this flow) is £266, so approx 1000 miles (depending on your route) for £6.10.
A loophole ticket would get you a long way for a reasonable price, but I am not going to post any of those!
Taking the shortest route by rail as the definition of the distance for consideration, Sherburn in Elmet to Whitby Off Peak Day Return (CDR) priced at 19.50 is pretty reasonable. Of course the distance by road is shorter and the train is slow.
Exeter to Penzance (CDR) at 23.80 is pretty good value, especially for a main line route.
There are proposals for all of these affordable fares to increase, and to use the extra money generated (which is flawed because it assumes people will still travel) towards reducing the cost of overpriced fares, such as Manchester to London Anytime Returns; see the following thread: https://www.railforums.co.uk/thread...ceptable-if-it-led-to-price-increases.220831/ !
All the buses in Merseyside for 5p if you compare a MerseyRail Daysaver £5.50 with a MerseyTravel Saveaway £5.55. Plenty of anomalies like this all over the place.
