Hi guys,

Going to take a train circa 9:30 from Chester and go to Leicester tomorrow.

I'm very relaxed about all the changes, as I'm keen to have nice air conditioned trains rather than that Crewe to Derby thing! So I will go via Stafford etc.

Any ideas about cheaper tickets, splits etc? Without going via Derby? I'm at £36 at the moment.

Many thanks,

James

Presuming you're coming back the same day, buying off peak day returns splitting at Stafford and Nuneaton saves £3.10 - not much, but it's better than nothing.

£36 single or return?

Splitting at Tamworth brings it down to £32.20 single with walk-on tickets.

According to Trains can be cheaper via Nuneaton is the shortest route

Splits*:
Chester-stafford £16.10
Stafford-Nuneaton £6.30 not via birmingham
Nuneaton-leicester £10.50

A train leaves at 9:35. Arriving 12:19

*Day return

Having one split at Tamworth is cheaper. (Both Off Peak Day returns)
Chester - Tamworth £17.40
Tamworth - Leicester £15.00

Note that if using an off peak day return from Tamworth or Nuneaton to Leicester you can not leave Leicester between 1530 and 1815

If you split at Tamworth, be careful what trains you catch coming back as there are a couple of fast trains (18.03 and 20.03) from Nuneaton to Stafford that connect nicely from Leicester but don't call at Tamworth.

Yeah, thanks a lot - I was just thinking that - I was thinking "Well... what happens if you miss the 1916...? What happens if it is delayed or you need to get back another way" - and it looks like the £3 split gamble might not be worth it..."
