Only a quick enquiry, this doesn't require any discussion. Could someone please list the chiltern 168/3 numbers and their former numbers as tpe 170s?

Ta muchly.

Have Chiltern got any in service yet please?

Chiltern had most of the first 5 in service by early this year if not earlier didn't they? At least one had been damaged by a tree by February. There are plenty of photos around showing some of them in operation as far back as October.

168325, I believe, now back in service.

Certainly two of 170303/306-308 now at Brush, perhaps all four, for conversion work to 168323/326-328.

Out of curiosity, why have they been numbered 16832x rather than 16830x?
My assumption is so that the final two digits of the unit numbers do not clash with any existing 168s: The last two digits within each class 168 sub-class has followed on sequentially from the last (although in this case there is a gap of one).

A similar idea to LM's 350s all having unique & consecutive last two digits then?

These are the previous numbers.

168 321 - 170 301
168 322 - 170 302
168 323 - 170 303
168 324 - 170 304
168 325 - 170 305
168 326 - 170 306
168 327 - 170 307
168 328 - 170 308
168 329 - 170 309 - 170 399

Hope this helps.

Yes that's correct. 325 was one of the two tree-damaged 168s (113 was the other). Both are repaired and back in service.

Once my pic is up on flickr, I will post it here.

When did the 4th one go in? I'm sure I saw one in service as recently as three weeks ago. Unless I've finally gone doolally.

After asking one silly question can I ask another. Do these units have any regular turns to Birmingham?

They do, but not many. For example, the northbound train which reached leamington at 0905 had a 168/3.

1R12 Marylebone to Moor Street. Late on in the day, I saw it working by itself.

Overall I'm a fan of 168/3s, they ride quite well, they don't rattle unlike other 168s and the use of the former first class as a quiet zone is a great decision. One thing that I'm not a fan of on them is the hardness of the seats but maybe they'll sofen over time...

See the 168/3s on the Snow Hill runs quite a bit - saw two coupled up as a 4 car the other day on a Mainline run and they're frequently used to strengthen services. Best use of one I saw was 168329 duelled up with 218 and 219 on a morning Kidderminster run.

I'm quite impressed by the 168/3s as well - very well done up, although that is no surprise with Chiltern. Certainly on a par with my personal favourites, the 168/2s.

I wonder if the original question by childwallblues came up because he'd heard that Southern take such a massive amount of time to bring transferred 170s into service?

Perhaps the projects were set up and Chiltern used days but Southern accidentally used weeks for the same activities?

Incidentally, are there any booked Chiltern 172 turns to Moor Street? Just as I left on the 20:18 last Thursday, a pair were sat shut down in the terminating platforms. Noticed one of the /3s up in Brum last week as well.

Occasionally, aren't they in the frequently requested diagrams thread? You wont find a single 172 unit working on its own.

Yes there are booked runs - believe the 1647 from London Marylebone to Moor Street is a Class 172/168 multiple run. Gets into Moor Street around 1841.

Funny enough I've seen two Class 172s coupled up at Moor Street a couple of times before in the evening. I don't know whether they return in the London direction in the early morning. The 0628 from Moor Street to Marylebone is not classified as a Mainline service (i.e 168 grey and white) so that may be a 172?

That one is an ex TPE 170 and two 3 car 168s.
