Every time I travel on Chiltern during the weekend their services are shortformed, right now I’m on a service from Brum to Marylebone and someone has put on a two carriage train.

During the weekdays trains are fully formed.

Weekday peaks there are often short formed services too. Their website lists a list daily of short formed services and they appear to have about 13 carriages out of action

Yes, everyday Chiltern send out a tweet with a list of peaktime shortform departures from Marylebone, due to “more than usual number of units out of service requiring repairs”

Given this list does not contain off peak services or services into London, Chiltern really do appear to have a serious stock shortage.

What is causing so many units to be out of service at the moment?

I know that 165013 hasn't been moved in months and is stuck in Aylesbury siding so that's 2 carriages down and 168004 is in for repair and it's been out for a while so that's another 4 carriages down and 165025 has had a emergency brake fault so that is out for a bit so that's in total 8 carriages out of use that I know of

From their website...

"
Following our last progress report in January there are several updates to share with you:

  • Storm Dennis created several issues for us including, but not limited to, a MKIII vehicle being unable to return to Wembley
depot due to the high winds which led to a silver set shortform. There were also two collisions with trees that took separate
trains out of action for several days.
  • A 4 car unit was recently sent away for repairs following an operational incident. The initial investigatory report is due out
from our suppliers within the next few weeks, but the repairs are thought to be extensive.
  • We have started a heavy maintenance program on our MKIII power door fleet. The project utilises our spare vehicles
and during this time we will have reduced contingency should issues arise on any other MKIII vehicles. However, this project
is essential to ensure the fleet continues to perform safely and reliably. The project is expected to be completed by the end of Q3."

Just a quick one, there a various rumours suggesting today’s Ex-AGA Mk3s from Norwich to Eastleigh by 60055 are for Chiltern. Presumably the Banbury AL06 replacement? The move involved 7x TSOs and 1x FO

They are indeed for Chiltern and will be repainted at Eastleigh. To be honest, apart from them being slightly more compliant than the previous "Banbury Set", this whole exercise seems a little pointless to me (it's DfT led) who could have just originally dictated that the Chiltern ones be made more compliant in the first place. They will of course be running until the end of the year too. At least the GA interior will be a bit smarter (and by sheer fortune closer to Chilterns) than the ex Virgin interiors of the Banbury set was.

The biggest benefit is that the toilets are controlled discharge.

It is to be hoped Chiltern have a new PRM dispensation agreed for this, as the dispensations apply by painted number.

I live close to the Chiltern Mainline and haven’t seen any 68 hauled trains for a good few weeks. Are any still running?

I would doubt it due to the reduced timetable in force.

I would imagine that they are operating a limited number of services, to keep them ticking over, and maintaining crew knowledge.
Just like EMR, they're using their HSTs twice a day now.
