Why when we had a class 100 DMU did we never have a 200 DEMU of 300 AC 400/500 DC but then we get a class 700. I have researched this and not found any planned use for 200, 300 , 301, 400 or 500

There was a Class 210 of two trial DEMUs based on the Mark III coach and looking very similar to the Class 317/455 units. The 300 series of numbers were based on Mark I and II AC EMUs and the 400 series were third rail EMUs for the Southern Region.

I think in this context the OP is asking why the exact initial numbers of each series, ie 200, 300, 400, etc were not used, but 700 was eventually. As is 800. Eg why was there not a Class 400 EMU?

Not quite the SUB,s , COR,s, BILS and HALS were not based on the MK1 or MkII nor were the 306, 502, 503 or 506, also the IOW stock but these all got TOPS codes

Exactly, even more intesting is why no 301, I have always thought it was because of the converted stock for the trial Morcambe electrification but never found any evidence to substantiate this

Confirmed on wikipedia, these were allocated the classification AM1, and all the subsequent AM designations simply had the AM replaced by 30. As these units were withdrawn long before the reclassification the 301 number was therefore never used
