Today is the third anniversary of the withdrawal of the Class 101s from main line service. To mark the occasion, I've created a gallery of a few pictures of 101s in the last few days of service, plus some photos of 101 action on this day in 2004, 2005, and earlier. (I think I am the only person to have ridden on a 101 on this day for the past 4 years - seems a good way to celebrate my birthday!!)

Gallery is at http://www.theblackwatch.fotopic.net/c1166991.html.

Amazing how those units managed to hang on in service for so long.

Happy birthday!

Considering they were due for replacement in the 90s, yes it is amazing they lasted as long as 2003. I spent an hour or so this eve watching a video of 101s (or 'Daisy' as my nephew who was round refers to all first gen units!) and much as I enjoy the old units, I have to admit, they didn't really fit in to the 21st century railway! Even the power twins were sluggish compared to modern units, never mind the power trailer sets.

There again, I don't think pacers really fit in on the modern railway either!
