I understand TfW are possibly getting another 6 153’s would they be the 6 ex west Midlands trains 153 are still stored at Nemesis Rail at Burton
That was happening - until one’s engine decided to suffer a catastrophic failure at Abbotswood Jn back in 2020 whilst Gloucester bound (then Canton I believe) but obviously that got caped

Recently last year 2021 (July approx) the ex lm and some emr 153s all got moved from burton to long marston for further storage apart from 153364 and 153366 which remained at burton on Trent.
However the ones at long marston are still being started up in case they’re needed according to some posts on here.
Also recently at xmas time some northern ones have been moved there also.
So its possible either ex northern emr or London Midland ones might join tfw.
However out of the 3. The ex London Midlands ones do have public information systems and screens inside them.

I am just trying to update my status and location notes for this class following the Dec 2021 timetable change.

I think the position is as follows:
  • EMR - On lease but stored (where?) - 308,319,355.357
  • Network Rail - in use or being converted for use - 311,376,385
  • Northern - on leave but stored at Newton Heath - 307,324,328,330,331,332,358,359,360,363
  • ScotRail - in use or being converted for use - 305,370,373,377,380
  • TfW - in use - 303,312,320,323,325,327,329,333,353,361,362,367,369,906,909,910,913,914,918,921,922,926,935,968,972,982 - 9xx units non PRM, but usable when coupled to a PRM unit
  • TfW - stored for spares/canabalisation at Landore - 374
  • Scrapped - 302,366
  • Stored at Burton-on-Trent - 364
  • Stored at Ely - 301, 304, 315, 317, 351, 352, 378
  • Stored at Long Marston - 316,334,354,356,365,371,375,379,381,383,384
Can anyone confirm this?

The EMR and Northern units are all off lease. Network Rail also have 153379/384 on lease.

153307/308/319/328/331/355/357 are at Ely
153324/330/332/358/359/360/363 are at Long Marston

Lots of conflicting reports at the moment on various social media sites & forums, with 366 & 364 being given as the identity of the unit scrapped.
Could we have some clarification please?
Number has been cut out for some reason.

That is a beautiful sight!

I've been waiting thirty years for these monstrosities to get cut up. Hopefully the rest will follow over the next decade.

Gosh, it appears that its already been reduced to not much more than a basic bodyshell before even reaching the scrapyard, bogies the lot!

Items like engines, bogies, transmissions are common across the 150-156 fleets, so totally understandable why it has been stripped so severely.

When you think that the leasing company involved is local, and the principal sub-assembly overhauler (LH Group) is down the road at Barton-under-Needwood, it's very straightforward to inspect, strip, sign-off and re-inject major components into the aftermarket repair loop, it's hardly surprising that these two vehicles have been hollowed-out of everything of value, locust-style!

Wonder what went out of the hole cut into the body side?
I've not worked on one for a while but I think that's the TCA2 cupboard where there is track circuit actuator kit and also the cock for emptying the toilet header into the engine coolant? They're firmly off my traction card now though.

That cabinet is much further back right by the small cab, and I believe on the other side if memory serves. Looking at internal pictures it might tally up with where LM fitted PIS screens or where one of the emergency brake handles in the saloon was. Possibly it was easier to pull out the emergency brake as one unit from the outside?

Perhaps! I know there was certainly a cupboard next to the bulkhead though what it was inside escapes me - this picture below shows them and if you count it's 5 window bays from the small end in the same place as on stripped unit.

TfW 153s continue to operate on Class 1 services. Yesterday morning 153327 and 153910 were noted at Stockport on the 0635 Cardiff to Manchester Piccadilly. They returned south on the 1039 to Milford Haven.

It's crazy, but let's not forget the 155s they were converted from after a short career were the booked stock for Manchester and Liverpool to Cardiff services until the 158s came in. They've never quite escaped the route though working locals, and having a small number of services booked ad hoc to swap between North and South Wales (same as the 150s). For a while I remember a lot of 158s having them booked on the formation to strengthen up to 3 carriages before 175s came onto the route en mass.

I have a feeling it was where the physical GSMR and OTDR units were, but I could be wrong.

bit of a odd tfw working today but 153353 and 362 are both working the Pembroke dock line coupled together so thats 2 fully prm compliant units on a line thats very quiet this time of the year surprised there isnt a prm lite unit instead

Sometimes it's just what makes operational sense for the company to put out, presuming it's booked 2 car, and passenger numbers or the PRM factor on 1 vehicle (or otherwise) doesn't come into it as those 2 were what was available and suitable for the job.

An ex-LM 153 body is now at Sims McIntyre's. Bodyshell is complete except for doors and most windows. Numbers appear to have been cut out, so unable to confirm which vehicle!

No trace at all now at Sims McIntyre's. All disappeared into the crusher in just a few days.

Looking at the photo with the stripped out shell remaining, I can see the similarities with it being a Leyland National Bus circa 1980.

Could it simply be that the panel was cut out to use it to repair corrosion on another unit?

There's a path booked at 1130 this coming wednesday from Landore to Canton sidings (via Swansea station at 1140), so perhaps 153972 is ready to return to service. 153982 has reportedly gone into the workshops, leaving just 918 and 374 outside in the yard.
