Such as...?

Or, as has been done to the death on here, if these are coupled up to a compliant DMU, then as long as the door mods and other work is done, the toilet can remain open. EMT have 153's, 156's and 158's. It makes complete sense to send the 153's there to add capacity. Couple up a 153 to a 156/158 that has the compliant bog.

Has a solution been found for the gas train to runaround? Although have to admit I haven't seen it in a while

If you're talking about the Bedworth Murco service, it never runs now, despite still being in the system

Just seen that on another thread. Thought it looked a little neglected these days. There was some work done on it last year.

1 per month leaving Overground and going to Ilford for toilet fitting. 710’s currently route testing on the GOBLIN and fault free running on WCML. As a temporary measure they’ve knocked a carriage out on a 379 to run that on the GOBLIN for now. IMHO they should never wasted the money on the 172’s in the first place giving no more capacity over the existing 150’s...

so there are now both Class 378 and 379 4-car units running on the line now...?

If you’re referring to the Barking-Gospel Oak route, there must have been some increase simply from the 172 being 23 metres and the 150 being 20 metres. Not much, but something nonetheless.

Plus not having even a small toilet like the 150, let alone an accessible one that's bigger than many London flats!

Doubt it, they'll just fit the bog and possibly do the C6. Or Tyseley will do it

It’s a small improvement but hardly was worth buying new trains at the time. Class 172 don’t even get into top gear until above 50mph and the line is mostly 45mph.

What was the point in buying 100mph trains if the line speed never gets above 50mph?
Was it just to ensure that they could be transferred elsewhere once the line is electrified?

I think your right about being transferred. Angel Trains will have known that they're future would be uncertain almost as soon as funding for the electrification scheme was announced in 2013. I think its also likely that this was the only Diesel powered MU on the market that the time?

They just happen to be 100 mph rated. The specified ZF gearbox means they're quite happy being used as suburban units. They're not like a 15x dual transmission where at about 44 mph they're thrashing their nuts off until they change over or even worse a 170 that changes over at 70.

I used to drive 172’s for Chiltern and they do suit stop/start work hence why they were used a lot on the Gerrards Cross terminators. Once or twice I managed 95mph between stops at Northolt Park and West Ruislip! They typically change gear 15/25/35/45/55 mph which means they’re forever going up and down the gears when traversing points or junctions at those speeds! This resulted in a few complaints from commuters.

Commuters actually notice things like that...?

They do on Chiltern. They hate the 172’s and much prefer the Clubman or Mk3 trains.

The 172’s have a plastic interior with rubber flooring so they rattle and shake.

Won't run this week, possibly next week. They're driver training runs for the 172's
