From 15.20 onwards the Newton service via Queen’s Park is usually a 314 that comes from Corkerhill. The 15.15 inner circle service is usually a 318/320.

I think overall capacity on the North Clyde and possibly Argyle lines is set to be reduced as a result of 318s/320s being cascaded to replace the remaining 314s next month.

    As in more 3-car off-peak?

What would the likelihood be of ScotRail getting a few more 321's for conversion, say 402/5/19? This would also help with the forthcoming 320 modifications being started next year.

I thought the 385s were intended to provide sufficient cover overall for 314 withdrawal. Doesn't say much for that if post-314s they have to reduce Argyle Line diagrams down to 3-car.

What is the basis for this? What will the remaining 385s be doing?

My thinking was that the remaining 385s would be used to strengthen Alloa/Dunblane/Stirling services to 6 cars in order to allow a full 8 car service on E - G via Falkirk.

Those services run as 6 cars during the peaks anyway, and there’s 4 car units to come off the Cumbernauld service too. Unless something has changed recently there’s enough 385s to go round so no need to reduce capacity on the north Clyde routes by stealing 320s.

I think stealing 318/320 from Argyle would be a bad move as a lot of services are busy when they have 3 carriages. I think more 320 conversion would be viable as Northern have a few coming off lease soon.

I would think you are talking at least 2026/2027 when they are 40 years old.

It's heavy maintenance rather than modifications.

Brodie Engineering (Kilmarnock) will be doing Time Based Overhaul (TBOX) work on the Class 320/3 fleet starting from January 2020 and running to the end of 2021. See this release: https://brodie-engineering.co.uk/ne...rsholt-rails-fleet-of-class-320-vehicles.html

I'd be very surprised if the 318s and 320s weren't replaced at the same time, possibly even the god awful 334s as well as they will be nearly 30 years old by the time the 318/320s are withdrawn. Personally I'd like to see something along the lines of the Class 700s but in fixed 6 car formations being the chosen type to replace them.

I think the 334s will be around for at least a decade after, giving that they are a modern EMU

If the remaining 318/320 diagrams on weekdays on Lanark/Gourock/Wemyss Bay/Paisley Canal are replaced by 380/385's that could free up 5 or 6 318/320's to replace the remaining 5 314 diagrams allowing the Argyle lines to remain as they are capacity wise. If they were to reduce capacity that would seem like a step backwards.

No doubt they will but I for one would love to see the back of them, hateful things.

What do you not like, if you don’t mind me asking? The aircon upgrade seems to have improved the ambience a bit & the 2+2 vehicles are fairly comfortable. They do appear to have a bit of an allergy to very cold weather though

I've never been a fan of them since they were introduced. Too many squeaks, rattles, jolts etc... Some of them sound like the bogies are ready to fall off. Fair enough, the 303s they replaced were also full of squeaks, rattles etc but they were 40 years old so it was expected but for a train that then was brand new to be the same put me right off them. Compared to the 380s and 385s they already feel quite dated.

There will be a certain amount of diagram changes to deal with the withdrawal of the 314s, however there are more than a few class 318 or 320 diagrams that throughout the course of a day, work both Inverclyde and Cathcart services. Units have worked both lines interchangeably for years and it would take a massive overhaul of diagrams to completely end that practice, so there's little point in swapping out class 320s from the Inverclydes - possibly more so from the remaining Lanark 6 car.

This means that class 380s and/or 385s will probably be seen more on the Cathcart routes after the timetable change, particularly during the day.

Fair enough. They are knocking on for 20 years old though. Definitely mid-life or just beyond it

The squeaks have calmed down a little bit thankfully, but I find them generally comfy units.

If only some of them went back to Inverclyde to replace a 314. :(

Just a gentle reminder this thread is to discuss Class 314 withdrawals; please create another thread if you wish to discuss anything else (or use an existing one if there is one), thanks

Thanks for explaining, it will be interesting to see what happens with the December timetable change and the 314 withdrawls anyway.

Would anyone on here be able to list what departures 314's normally work from Glasgow Central on a weekday (next Monday to be specific....) around 0930-1000 please? Day trip up there for a last 314 trip amongst other stuff....quite happy with just a Cathcart circle run.

    Many thanks!
