It could be worse, in another life they could have been refurbished and used on an electrified South Wales Valley service.

To be fair they’re nice units to travel on, the only thing that lets them down is the ridiculous seat-window alignment, other than that they’re fine. They’re getting on admittedly but they’re still decent enough trains IMO.

At least they’ll get one last journey under their own power to Ilford before one of ROG’s finest takes them to South Wales for the chop
MTR have done a deal with ROSCO, 833 now going back to MTR and their demic 852 going to scrap instead.

315852 + 315811 have been given their final marching orders. Both PEPs now en-route to Newport behind 37800 and if I’m correct in saying, 852 is the first TfL Rail set since last year to go for scrap (as the past several scrap moves have been LO and ex-TFL LO sets)

801/815 Northampton Friday
810/859 off lease Saturday
802/807 last ARL survivors from Monday (no booked work, but quite likely to be out to release 710s for training)

At least you can see out the windows easily unlike a 710 where all you get is the person opposite you obscuring the view

Im delighted the 315's roll on but with TfL finances in such a perilous state how on earth can they justify keeping them on with so many 345s sat idle but costing lease charges.

The reason they are being kept on till Dec 2021 is because Liverpool Street hasn’t been modified to take 9 car 345’s yet ( work starts this Christmas shutdown) Work is due to finish late March 2021 with commissioning due for early April. It will only give a few weeks to replace the 315’s and increase the 345’s to 9 car formations before the May timetable change.

Given progress (or lack of) elsewhere on Crossrail there is no need convert the units to 9car for the May TT change given December is the likely date for Shenfield services to start going in the tunnels. The problem is that they can't convert may units at a time after the Abbey Wood - Paddington service starts up as the float of spare unit not required for Abbey Wood - Paddington and the current GSML service level is fairly small hence the 315 enable more of the remaining 7car units to be converted at the same time. 9car units reliability and residual infrastructure issues do need sorting on the GWML so all the 7cars on the west can be converted before the Abbey Wood - Paddington services start in earnest and certainly most of them before the large scale testing stats early in 2021.

create a few more 7 cars then they've got 70 units to pay with - 15 for the West side diagrams, 20 for East side plus 10 spares because they are unreliable still leaves them 25 units for tunnel testing!
