According to Richard Clinnick in RAIL 905, the 345s have been cleared for service to Heathrow with the ETCS Level 2 overlay system.

Well yes, subject to the limitations in the document linked in message 3,301 above. It isn't going to happen just yet.

The only thing (unless I've misread the ORR letter) currently blocking their service is paperwork — the Network Rail Summary of Compatibility.

The other issues noted either have temporary permission (therefore a software update is due to fix them); permanent permission (an isolator's interface being out-of-spec); or are irrelevant (the vast majority being technical support for features of railways in mainland Europe).

I believe (happy to be corrected) that the CL. 345s have permission to run as they are doing so, not in passenger traffic.
The units have not been signed off (yet) for passenger use on the Heathrow branch due to the issues outlined previously.

The class has two SoC's (Statement / Summary of Compatibility) One for testing (and possibly delivery) and a second for passenger service.

edit:
Perhaps someone with sight of the CL. 345 SoC could confirm if the Heathrow branch appears and what it says?

I believe the ETCS in the Heathrow tunnels are staying as an overlay system for a while yet as the signal posts will remain as well as having the in can ETCS

Surely that is a given if 332s are going to overlap in use with 345s which seems likely. 345s have been going empty for Heathrow for quite a while now. 387 introduction seems to still be a while off.

Down to one 360 out in service now today.

Of the three cycles, the one starting with the 0532 departure from Paddington has been a 345 terminating at Hayes all day today. Another has just returned empty from Heathrow to Old Oak Common depot. No sign yet of another 345 coming out to replace it so the cycle from Paddington at 1402 is cancelled, 1432 running to Hayes and the 1502 with a 360 running to Heathrow. Meanwhile a 345 is on '5Zxx' empty workings between Paddington and Heathrow.

On Reading services, the cycle of 7 9-car units and 2 7-car units has persisted with the 7-car units working the same diagrams each day swapping mid morning.

7-car workings currently appear to be:

5P10 0527 Maidenhead Carriage Sdgs to Reading / 9P10 0603 Reading to London Paddington / 9R20 0713 London Paddington to Reading / 9P28 0822 Reading to London Paddington / 5Y11 0928 London Paddington to Old Oak Depot

5P14 0640 Maidenhead Carriage Sdgs to Maidenhead / 9P14 0645 Maidenhead to London Paddington / 9R24 0743 London Paddington to Reading / 9P32 0852 Reading to London Paddington / 5Y12 0958 London Paddington to Old Oak Depot

5R52 1050 Old Oak Depot to London Paddington / 9R52 1113 London Paddington to Reading / 9P60 1222 Reading to London Paddington / 9R72 1343 London Paddington to Reading / 9P80 1452 Reading to London Paddington / 9R90 1558 London Paddington to Reading / 9P98 1703 Reading to London Paddington / 9R08 1813 London Paddington to Reading / 9P16 1922 Reading to London Paddington / 9R28 2043 London Paddington to Reading / 9P36 2152 Reading to London Paddington / 9N48 2313 London Paddington to Maidenhead / 5N16 0008 Maidenhead to Maidenhead Carriage Sdgs

5R56 1120 Old Oak Depot to London Paddington / 9R56 1143 London Paddington to Reading / 9P64 1252 Reading to London Paddington / 9R76 1413 London Paddington to Reading / 9P84 1522 Reading to London Paddington / 9R94 1628 London Paddington to Reading / 9P02 1734 Reading to London Paddington / 9R12 1844 London Paddington to Reading / 9P20 1952 Reading to London Paddington / 9R32 2113 London Paddington to Reading / 9P40 2222 Reading to London Paddington / 9N52 2343 London Paddington to Maidenhead / 5N18 0025 Maidenhead to Maidenhead Carriage Sdgs

9-cars on the other diagrams

Worse than I thought.

I was on 14:13 from Pad and noticed that there were 3 360s at OOC as we passed.

A replacement 360 is being sent to Heathrow for 9P89 1622 Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 to London Paddington by the looks of things. Two round trips from Heathrow to Paddington cancelled.

From the Class 315 withdrawal thread.
The time of 7-cars out of Paddington is nearing an end...
There is a section (4.1 on page 26) in latest TfL Board papers referring to the 7-car 345s going to be moved from West (which since 18 May is using 9-car) to Shenfield service to replace 315s

Therefore appears latest strategy is replacing 315s soon, but I’m not sure how this will affect Liverpool Street platform changes. However it does say Whitechapel and Liverpool Street now handed over, so maybe will be a diversion there, or simply no peak extra trains for a while

Yes, nearing an end, but observations of what is actually in service shows that 7-cars are still in use pending more of the shortened units being returned to full length.

7-car units 345007, 014, 022 and 051 have all been in use out of Paddington today.

The only 9-cars to be used in service remain 345021, 027, 028, 030, 034, 035, 037, 053, 054, 058, 060, 063 and 064.

There are moves in place to switch units between Ilford and Old Oak Depot to allow more of the 'converted' 7-cars to be brought back to Old Oak Depot but they aren't back in service as 9-cars yet.

Current practice appears to be 7 9-car and 2 7-car diagrams each day (with the 7-car units spending the night at Maidenhead and switching during the day rather than overnight).

Saw 345005 on Slough RalCam yesterday.

It was out on Monday but finished at Old Oak Depot. I didn't notice it yesterday but that doesn't mean it wasn't.

By observation, three 7-cars out in service this morning 345015 on 0558 from Paddington, 345007 on the 0628 and 345022 on the 0658 (plus 345017 empty on 5G70 0550 Old Oak Depot to Maidenhead Carriage Sidings). 9-cars 028, 027, 063, 054, 037 and 064.

Saw a class 345 leaving the Old Dalby test track this morning, dragged by a class 37 and heading to Worksop. First time I've seen one with 'Elizabeth Line' roundels instead of tfl rail ones too.

All a bit bizarre this morning - 345035 and 345055 appear to be working in service to Reading - the first time for 345055 as a 9-car and for 345035 since 9-car working has become prevalent (although 345035 worked Hayes shuttles in the past).

The branch to Heathrow appears to have been out of bounds until 7.40 and then only available for Heathrow Express with further cancellations this morning and no TfL Rail service until midday.

TfL Rail appear to have cancelled all the xx02/xx32 services to Heathrow and have two 345s [1] out working to Hayes every half hour in the xx18/xx48 slots.

[1] Note that 5T09 shows on RTT as coming from Old Oak Common EMU depot but actually came from Old Oak Depot

This afternoon sees TfL Rail running Hayes / Heathrow services with class 360 departing Pad at 02 and 32 mins past the hour respectively.

Yes, there appears to be single line working in the tunnels at Heathrow and only alternate Hayes / Heathrow services as a result.

In mid-April I saw 345031 & 033 parked in sidings in Westbourne Park, near Royal Oak tunnel portal. I passed by today and the sidings were empty. Is testing taking place or have these test units just been taken to sidings elsewhere?

There was testing today but it was on the other side of London.

Two units appear to have run from Abbey Wood to operate between Maryland, Stratford and into the tunnels.
eg https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/F68333/2020-06-07/detailed
https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/detailed/LSX/2020-06-07/0200-0159?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt

The indications are that there are loads of different test scenarios to run so they won't all be on the west side of the tunnels.

The sidings at Westbourne Park are reversing sidings, not the stabling point for the units which, today, appear to have come from Abbey Wood.
Indications are that 345024/25/31/32/33/36/41/50 are the units dedicated to tunnel testing at the current time.

345019 has gone from Old Dalby to Worksop (on May 21st), taking the place of 345026 - which has now gone to Old Oak Common (on June 2nd).

Information elsewhere suggests that it was 345046 that moved to Worksop on that date and that 345019 remains at Old Dalby with 345045/46/48 at Worksop.
