All of the intermediate stations on the GOBLIN (excluding Gospel Oak and Barking themselves) have 7 million entries per year, combined.

Surrey Quays station (the main beneficiary of the near-empty New Cross services) has 4.8 million entries by itself.

Oh no they don't!!! Silwood Junction was grade separated as part of the ELL rebuild works in 2007-2009 to remove any conflicts...

Sounds like time for a field trip south of the river to experience the ELL in the morning peak

Towards Tulse Hill, yes. Silwood junction is only a turnoff for Tulse Hill. The turning for New Cross is on the level.

LO services don't go to Tulse Hill you mean Clapham Jn via Peckham?
I should have been a bit clearer: Grade seperating Silwood Jn means there are very few capacity constraints at Canal Jn. The grade seperated southbound Clapham services provide a convenient 3.5min gap at Canal junction for the northbound ex New Cross services hence there are no conflicting moves if everything is (almost) running to plan.

Even with the grade separation, it seems fairly common to find yourself on an LO train waiting just before Silwood on either branch, especially in the peak when the trains pick up a lot of delays through the core. Don't recall waiting at Canal Junction more than once or twice, ever!

 And this is based on your experience of using GOBLIN, or just hearsay?

I lived 5 mins from Leyton Midland Rd for 2 1/2 years (2014-7) and used the line every day before the long term closure. I can't speak for the daytime, but during the peaks 2 cars certainly did not cope! I lost count of the number of times I was left on the platform if I missed the peak time relief service (which doesn't even run anymore, so God knows what it's like now...). I suspect all of the disruption will have suppressed demand somewhat in the last couple of years but the passengers will come back when TfL finally get their act together.

The main issue with the buses was that they always got stuck in gridlocked traffic in Walthamstow. Hoe Street was always very busy, but the situation has been compounded by long term roadworks at the Walthamstow Central overbridge. I gave up on the rail replacements as they refused to stop at the last bus stop on Hoe Street, and simply took a 69 and walked the last bit into the station to save a few minutes.

Where are people getting the idea that the New Cross service is near-empty?

Awwwwww. The old East London Line. That was so sweet!

Speaking as someone who is local to that bit, New Cross isn't this backwater branch that nobody uses. I'm glad that this closure is a concocted forum fantasy.

Not me! I'm just an annoyed East London commuter who doesn't want to see reductions in our ELL service to compensate for Bombardier's incompetence!

You could always blame the Mayor of (Greater) London ;) After all, append a 't onto the end of his surname and you have something that sounds like can't. As in Sadiq can't get anything right.

Besides, if the ELL core is experiencing congestion issues, New Cross would still be the least worst service to drop (even assuming equal loadings).

Reading the thread, my thought was similar - as a non-local I have thought 2 car was never enough for such a central line and I have tried it at peak and it was full and standing from Barking (ironically it broke down and we had to return to Barking, where there was a platform full of people waiting who had to then try cram on the next 2 car, along with the lot from the failed unit - we gave up and went on C2C instead)

Easy to blame him when he wasn't even in charge when Bombardier was awarded the contract.......

But he was around when it was decided that mitigation planning was too expensive and unnecessary though!
