What was the difference between 253 and 254 ?

Its goes back to the days when BR considered an HST as a multiple unit (let's leave that can of worms firmly shut for now) so different lengths got different TOPS class numbers.

Have heard porterbrook have donated 43056(254001) to the Welsh Railway Trust on Gwili Railway
That's certainly what's been announced, but 43056 is currently a spare parts donor at Laira. 43053 is at Long Marston and is an original Western Region power car, I wonder why that one wasn't chosen?

Class 253 = Western Region originally 7 coaches and Cross Country 5-6 coaches
Class 254 = Eastern Region 8-10 coaches and Scottish Region

Class 255 = Castle / Cross Country sets 4/5 coaches, and maybe Scotrail ones?

Well that is just horribly incorrect in so many ways.

So what is correct then?
Class 253 - 7 trailer car as built (WR allocated including NE/SW sets)
Class 254 - 8 trailer car as built (ER and ScR allocated)

Became defunct once the decision was made in the 1980s to classify the power cars as Class 43 and the trailers as coaching stock.

"Class 255" is nothing more than a contrivance created by GWR: there is nothing classified as Class 255 in the national vehicle register.

Didn't the original "Challenger" and "Pioneer" plans involve class 255 back in the oughties ? I forget now because we were all mentally slaughtered from Op Princess but there were two fleets of 2+5s planned with one of them based at Tyseley to work Birmingham-Blackpool amongst other routes. Can't remember if the were Challengers or Pioneers but I have a feeling 255 found it's way into the Crewplan rostering system - a good decade before GWRs 2+4s.

Wiki has a pretty decent summary of the plans here

Class 255 has never existed on TOPS.

Challenger wasn't planned as 14 sets, either, as there were 22 power cars in the Challenger pool, which means a maximum of 11 sets and more likely 10.

I saw a brief snippet on Twitter today that four HSTs are going for scrap from Long Marston next week.

I understand these are 43053/070/079 (albeit that is only three) and are moving on Monday.

Does anyone know what the timings of the move is please?

Are these ex-EMT? Presumably have been/will be stripped for parts beforehand?

Nope; although they are all Porterbrook machines, they were all GWR-operated at point of withdrawal. 079 was unnamed, 053 was "University of Worcester", and 070 was "The Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers".

Annoyingly 079 was always a good runner on the Western (and one of the last to retain it's Valenta engine) while 053, which has been rather around the houses, has the upgraded Electronics as fitted to all MML / East Coast / XC power cars. A bit of a shame to see those two go in the bin.

I found 070 excellent the last year or so it worked, always lots of amps, always recorded a decent speed up the banks and seemed to get upto linespeed fast. Shame they didn't manage to rehome that one.

Very good afternoon departed from long marston around 20 to minutes late and through honeybourne my local area shortly afterwards with 37611 on front with 43053 43079 43070 and Barrier vehicle 6340 on rear. 43053 did look very sorry for itself though.

A tad ironically, it reported arriving at Newport exactly 43 late...

Would this be the first time an intact power car has been scrapped? Others have either been accident damaged, or stripped for parts first at depots.

I don't think so. Think that 43061 and 43075 would take the mantle of being the first intact power cars scrapped, with them both being sent to Newport last year.

It would be odd not to given the young age of the MTU 4000s
They have been intensively worked, though, and many of the engines are approaching their third QL4 full life overhaul, at which point they apparently turn into pumpkins and MTU may not give you the same warranty on the overhaul.
