Sorry if this has been covered before but out of interest does anyone know what the new motors would have sounded like? Would of it been like the SWR class 455s? Thanks

Is there any further use planned for the remaining carriages? (and before anyone says anything I don't mean harebrained ideas for loco haulage, I mean things like target practice for the army, or fire service training etc
After the departure of the GUV from Brockenhurst (see https://www.railforums.co.uk/thread...ke-hire-place-at-brockenhurst-station.217949/) maybe one could be placed on the now vacant track length. Some local entrepreneur could run it as a restaurant specialising in pulled pork

The NRM aren't known for their logical decision making - just look at flying moneypit... I'd totally agree that this is worth of a place in the NRM but suspect they filed it under the 'too difficult' category as it's not a kettle.
But ultimately there's nothing radical about the 442s, it's not as if they were a massive technological or "marketing" shift forward.

Yes they're EMUs and have the powered doors that all Mk3 carriages should have had, but it hardly makes them museum worthy. A Class 313, as the start of a whole new generation of trains, was far more important

The 442s were impressive and had a few unique features, but I agree there's nothing massively special about them, not that would particularly entice normals to go and see them in a museum. It's a shame they'll all go, but it isn't possible to save everything.

Subjective, as they were the last proper Southern Region EMUs to be built and as far as I'm aware they were at one point the fastest third rail EMU in the world being capable of 109 mph. Nothing by today's standards self admitted.

They were the last EMUs to follow Southern tradition by reusing recovered traction equipment from more elderly REP units.

Worthy of being preserved even as a static exhibit, but unfortunately I can't see that happening.

Kind Regards.

Seems to me some form of charter train perhaps a tarted up Blue Pullman style HST version would seem like the only reasonable prospect for further use, but then that needs someone with deep pockets and a business plan, and would potentially compete against such as the Brighton Belle although I'm not sure I will still be alive by the time they finish that at present rates.

The Forum Staff have decided to bring this thread to a close at this point as this thread was now very very lengthy and was starting to go off and cover a wide range of topics which would probably be better suited to their own threads allowing people who are interested in one aspect to comment on that without the people who are not interested having to wade through it all. There are a couple new threads which therefore maybe of interest going forward:
Members would of course be welcome to start another thread for another aspect if it isn't already covered above (as always we have plenty of capacity for more threads ;)!

Many thanks,
