Hi all,

When travelling today I have just passed through Preston station - I could see a DRS class 57 'thunderbird', stabled im a north-facing bay platform (I think).

Unfortunately, it's position put it in a fair amount of shade, rendering the locomotives number unreadable to me.

So, I am wondering if anyone might know which 57 is/was stabled at Preston, at this point?

Thanks!

How many thunderbirds are there stationed along the whole line?

Normally one at Preston, Crewe, Rugby, Carlisle (station or on Kingmoor) and one in the Euston/Wembley. Also sometimes one at Polmadie, Glasgow. As with anything railway related this isn't alway the case!

Its is also sometimes stabled in the old platform 1 "bay" that was created when they truncated the through line at Preston. Also there has been a "Thunderbird" stabled here for a number of years, can't remember exactly how many though, maybe someone knows?

Forgive my ignorance but how far away/close do the drivers normally have to be from the thunderbird locos?

I would imagine sometimes weeks pass without needing the Thunderbird so it begs the question of how close the drivers would need to be to respond within the timeframe required by Network rail or the TOC.

Im not 100% sure on this so if someone else knows im sure they'll correct me, but I was under the impression they are driven by Virgin drivers so they wouldn't have to travel very far at some locations.
