The South Devon Railway have announced that 60029 Ben Nevis will be the star attraction at its diesel gala. It is visiting courtesy of DC Rail. Set the date for your diary,it’s Saturday 09 November 2024.
A first for the Devon line and the loco has not,it is claimed, worked a passenger train since 2003! More details on the SDR website.

Could possibly be correct with the 60 not working a passenger train since 2003! I did Pathfinder’s “Metropolis Meanderer” on 9th August 2003, and 60029 worked the Nuneaton to Kettering leg of the tour!

I think autotrailer 233 (ADW150375 Test Car 1) has air brakes, as it has been used previously with air only locomotives.

GWR 233 Hawksworth Autotrailer Third built 1951

How big a draw is 60029 and how many other events are running concurrently to divert attention from it?

A suggestion elsewhere is that it is limited to working north of Staverton by weight limits on the line (other than for entry / exit from the line).

I wouldn't have considered going before the 60 was announced, will try and move other commitments to go now, especially as I have an 0 gauge model of 60029 om display above my desk.

Has anyone found a timetable for this event, have looked but can't see one, ideally with what is rostered on each train please?

Another couple of days gone and still no timetable, I see there are a couple of comments on their facebook which have been ignored so presumably SDR can run a gala by ignoring potential visitors

I must say that I have found the SDR less friendly since the pre-COVID days - probably this is a common change of attitude; not just them! But I remember a time when they were far more enthusiast oriented.

If they don't publish timetable by tomorrow I won't be going. Not spending best part of £70 getting there and buying a ticket with no guarantee of what's happening.
Anyone have any info at all, please? Would be useful just to know what the 60 is doing.

Sadly the SDR have never excelled at advertising themselves especially galas. I only found out about the diesel gala because I received their newsletter about the 60 coming just over a week ago.

It’s disappointing to see the comments here. Was really hoping the SDR may have got back on track. No lure for me there any more and to echo other comments really does not feel enthusiast orientated on my last visit. Hoping for more timely info in the future and more of the site opened up again.

Your best bet is to contact the railway by phone. I'm not sure why the timetable is so delayed but i would imagine its due to the complexity of the Class 60 which can only operate on half the line and requires either a brake translator or dual-braked coaching stock.

Contact SDR for enquires on this number: 01364 644 370

Possibly a question without a definitive answer this far in advance but can it be ascertained what service 60029 (hopefully) will work into Bristol East Depot on the 8th November? Is it currently working relatively locally? (Or perhaps already on the depot?)

Currently working a Tytherington circuit so should be relatively straightforward to get to Bristol off that.
