Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and every parent thinks their child is lovely :) We do not have a good record of design in this country recently. I would say that the heyday of the old design panel (Hymeks, 47s, HST) has not been approached since, and even they got it horribly wrong (Westerns). Mostly we have gone for the boringly functional (see klamberts avatar!)

Hey there is nothing wrong with my avatar. The thumpers certainly look better than the modern EMUs but I would say the 450s and 444s look quite handsome.

who made the engine?

Im guessing its a V12, my mate reckons it sounds abit like a 12VP185 and that growl is like the growl you get off a Paxman YJ3/RP200

3700hp GE PowerHaul P616 from memory.

The info on freighliners site:-

http://www.freightliner.co.uk/newsdetail.aspx?newsid=156

The pdf factsheet:-

http://www.freightliner.co.uk/filelibrary/PDFs/news/Fact Sheet.pdf

the press release:-

http://www.freightliner.co.uk/filelibrary/PDFs/news/2009.07.10 PowerHaul testing.pdf

and the vital specs :-

i have also asked a couple of lads on youtube, who live next to the GM plant--** sorry it is a GENERAL ELECTRIC LOCO **--, to video these locos testing, dont forget these engines are 4 stroke unlike the 66 s which are 2 strokers.

I don't really know what to make of this, I don't think the picture dose it an favours, Maybe we we get some proper shots of in the Freightliner livery it
won't look so bad.

Then again it might just stick out like sore thumb

You are unlikely to see it at the GM plant when it is a GE locomotive, they are different locomotives and different engines.

OK, my thoughts on all the "ugly ducklings" posted in the thread:

Takasaki - A train that's just ran into the back of a rare and demented Ferrari. Ugly.
V250 - Same as above, except swap Ferrari for first gen FIAT Multipla. Lunch losingly terrible.
Talgo 350 - Why on Earth do they have to look like sodding ducks these days? Bah.
Class 70 'Predator': I actually like it. Who just set fire to me?

It's a case of function over form - the ducknoses give better aerodynamic performance - I beleive that it also reduces pressure waves in tunnels. They look ugly but are there for a reason

It does indeed. At those high speeds, the pressure wave from hitting a tunnel would be beyond EU safety limits.

come on guys give the Genesis a chance. yes may look ugly but may sound beastly. think about the horn it may have. iv heard rumours it could have near the same horn as the usa genesis amtrak horn. if so do not ask for a tone or you may need a hearing aid haha.

Surely not. I'd assume there would be H&S rules and guidelines regarding the volume of the horn?

Got some video today of one of the new units. I talked to somone from GE today and he said 6 locos are done with two painted. The order is for up to 30 locomotives. They will all be shipped out on flatcars with the trucks removed. He said the locos are going through extensive testing before they are shipped out. I posted it on youtube. I will try to get more video of them. I did get a nice sunburn at the tracks today! I did see 2 NS and 8 CSX trains while waiting to see the new loco.

This is the latest message off my guy in Eerie, I will upload video ASAP

That bodywork can't be finished... the gaping grilles and the weirdly overhanging baffles around the exhaust? Surely???

Edit... found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtwbHU-8i08&feature=related

It's worse than it looks in the first vid!! Look at the light clusters, they're on stalks... WHY????!!!

Because the fairing around the cab aircon has been removed. If you look at it in static shots the lights are slightly more flush!

Thats quite a deadload behind it, all those engines are using dynamic braking against the class70, pretty impressive!
