I thought the same too.Would Freightliner be storing the majority at Crewe? My impression was that they are to be retained and overhauled.
Any particular company?Have the Class 86 electrics gone for scrap or gone in to storage? If stored, where would they be?
Stored pending refurbishment to allow expansion of operations. I haven't seen anything to say this is no longer the plan but of course things can change very quickly.I read awhile ago that Freightliner were going to store them properly with the intention of bringing them back at some stage (or at least having that option), I don't know if that has actually been the case though?
And then of course there were the two locos wrecked at Colwich in 1986... Wasn't there an 86 that got scrapped after a collision/derailment involving a mail train shortly after privatisation too?Any particular company?
I believe Freightliner have stored their remaining ones (17 locos I believe).
There are then 3 preserved operational 86s.
There are some which were exported to Hungary and to Bulgaria (15, plus one since scrapped.)
The remainder have been scrapped, mostly in the early 2000s.
Stafford in 1996? 86239 was working a TPO train that rear-ended a freight. And then of course there were the two locos wrecked at Colwich in 1986... Wasn't there an 86 that got scrapped after a collision/derailment involving a mail train shortly after privatisation too?
Pretty certain that was the one I had in mind. yesStafford in 1996? 86239 was working a TPO train that rear-ended a freight.
It wasn’t that at all: an axle on a wagon in a southbound freight train failed, derailing the train foul of the opposite line, where it was hit by 86239 on a northbound TPO.Stafford in 1996? 86239 was working a TPO train that rear-ended a freight.
Apologies the sentence was rather ambiguous. The accident archive listing is much better, making clear that a vehicle of the freight had an axle failure which caused it to derail where it then fouled the path of the TPO. Which is rather different from rear-ending.It wasn’t that at all: an axle on a wagon in a southbound freight train failed, derailing the train foul of the opposite line, where it was hit by 86239 on a northbound TPO.
Wasn't 211 the only 86 to be retired in BR Blue? The 2 that got wrecked at colwich was 86211 City of Milton Keynes and 86429 The Times remember seeing both at crewe works on the 4th of July 1987.

And not actually a City!86211 City of Milton Keynes
And there was also 86611 Airey Neave and 86631 at Norton Bridge on 16th October 2003, which crashed with a stationary train and the cause was down to SPAD.The 2 that got wrecked at colwich was 86211 City of Milton Keynes and 86429 The Times remember seeing both at crewe works on the 4th of July 1987.
