Hi,

Wanted to start a thread on the subject on the Class 92's and there whereabouts as many are dotted around everywhere, some working, some not so lucky. Does anyone know what the current state of the Class 92's are? I've heard that the CS one/s are out of action of the sleeper, and yesterday one operated a Garston to Dagenham Car Train throughout the night and returned to Willesden TMD yesterday evening. Which are in operation and which aren't also? Thanks.

The 6X41 and 6L48 GBRf car trains from Dagenham-Garston usually produce a 92, though 66s sometimes operate it.
6M45, the DBC Dollands Moor-Daventry bottled water train sometimes has a 92 going all the way, but most times it swaps out for a 66 at Wembley.
All HS1 freight has a 92 on it.
GBRf 92s sometimes do the empty stock for the Sleeper in Scotland, particularly in Glasgow.
6S94, a china clay train from Dollands Moor to Irvine (via Mossend), usually has pairs of 90s, but it had a 92 on it in the past 6 months.

92010, 92018, 92023, 92032, 92043 and 92044 have all appeared on 6X41 / 6L48 and also (TO) 6X43 / 6L47 over the last six months, since the reintroduction on the Dagenham - Garston auto trains. Occasionally a Class 66 will substitute on these trains too or may be go as far as Crewe, then swap over for the Class 92.

Does anyone know of their likely return date to the Caledonian Sleeper? Easter was touted some months ago but that's now been and gone .....:o

Still relating to the sleeper, what was the issue with the 92s that caused their withdrawal?

They had massive reliability problems, usually because (but not limited to) them having extra safety systems in them (because they were designed for use in the channel tunnel) and the saftey systems which they have really did not like going through neutral sections and kept on tripping the system or the change in voltage i believe it was around the Warrington area that they also did not like

Unfortunately 86101 and 86401 are the less likely to be used due to the ETH requirements not matching up to the stock that they are hauling. So really will only be used if there is nothing else left. You have more chance of bagging yourself a 87.

Isn't 87002 the only serviceable 87 left in the UK? So really, the 87.

I was involved in the Channel Tunnel Project and I remember the Class 92s were the great white hope for traction to haul the projected 20-30 freight trains per day, plus the North-of-London sleepers, which of course never materialised.

It's been a tragedy that so many expensive locos have spent most of their lives in store. And at the least ironic that pairs of ancient Class 86s still soldier on: another unintended consequence of privatisation (BR would have scrapped the 86s, but Freightliner they can't use 92s as they don't own them)

Neutral sections aren't the problem, there's a harmonic interference problem with (we think) the Weaver Junction feeding station which upsets the Interference Current Monitoring Unit (ICMU).

The ICMU is an item of technology designed to stop the Class 92s from being damaged by erratic currents, when they were first introduced, the Class 92s would work alongside some really quite electrically 'dirty' traction which generated all sorts of stray interference.

The ICMU is only active when the Class 92s operate on the 'classic' UK network, on HS1 interference wasn't considered an issue so it's deactivated and they run reliably there.

On a train somewhere in Europe

The loco does not usually change at Wembley, it is booked to be the same loco from Dollands Moor whether it is a 66 (most of the time) or the occasional 92, this was also the case when the train previously ran as 6B20 / 6B41.

Thanks for clearing that up.
