Services halted after two trains crash near Salisbury - BBC News

A number of passengers have been injured in a crash between two trains near Salisbury.
The collision happened near London Road with police, the fire service, paramedics and British Transport Police at the scene.
About 12 people are thought to have been injured and one of the drivers is believed to be trapped in their cab.
Other train services in the area have been halted. No further details were immediately available.
BBC reporter James Ingham said none of the passengers were believed to have been seriously injured.

Both South Western Railway and Great Western Trains said their services had been stopped.

All passengers evacuated (some with cuts and bruises) and both drivers have now been rescued.

GWR struck an object and derailed, which knocked out the signalling. SWR subsequently hit the GWR. This is from the NR Press Release apparently:

Salisbury collision: GWR 1708 Portsmouth-Bristol struck object, derailed as it approached Salisbury. Derailment knocked out signalling. SWR 1720 London-Honiton hit Bristol train. Reports of injuries. This from NR press statement.

Excellent to hear that everyone has been rescued. Can't have been easy to get everyone out of an overturned train in a tunnel, especially one of BR heritage that won't be up to modern crashworthiness standards.

158's have proved to be very crashworthy over the years

RAIB report will be interesting on this one if this had caused signalling irregularity such that a following train has received a proceed aspect allowing an initial accident to be worsened. Delighted to here the injuries are minor as this is most important fact currently.

Saw on Twitter someone report that the GWR derailing knocked out the signalling. Apologies if that’s inappropriate speculation and please delete if so.

That's good to hear that people are safe. Tunnel incidents are one of my fears and this could have ended much worse.

Inevitably questions will be asked, and I'm interested in the answers.

Do we know this to be true?

The reports say the signalling was knocked out. We don't know how that happened. It's quite possible that the signal protecting the tunnel was no longer operating correctly. The cabling could easily have been damaged during the train derailment.

I'm also glad that everyone seems to be (relatively) unscathed.
