Would it not be better to use a single unit to operate a regular all day shuttle Kettering-Oakham and divert the Meridian units to operate extensions from Derby to Stoke to relieve pressure on that line as opposed to a four or five carriage 'private taxi' for the three passengers who travel through to Melton Mowbray?

If you mean Derby to Stoke, just that service then maybe, but I doubt you'd be able to extend St. Pancras services to Stoke, moderation of competition and all that.

Doubt you'd be able to run hourly Kettering - Oakham with one unit, especially with the necessary shunt at the latter. The couple that run via Melton during the day use units that are probably used for peak services to/from London, so couldn't be used to strengthen Crewe trains at the busiest times anyway.

What are you suggesting should happen to the existing all day St Pancras Corby service then ?
