Could EMR HSTs be sent to GWR to cover for IETs?

Perish the thought, but could they be being withdrawn early to send to GWR?
The derogation for the EMR HST sets to remain in traffic will specify the routes they are permitted to operate on, so operation on the GWML would be impossible without a new or amended derogation.

Seeing odd 43s and coaches seemingly abandoned around the network this week I suspect those remaining units aren't in a fit state to offer any reliable relief without more work than fixing 8xx units. The assumption of imminently being scrapped has left most in a poor state, never mind the doors. I'd agree, unlikely to be worth the effort.

My original comment was somewhat tongue in cheek!

And have the problems with morons hanging out of the windows follow them over? Not worth the trouble, in my mind.

Got told last night that East Midlands Railway are withdrawing the HSTs earlier then expected because of that very problem with idiots hanging out the windows.

While I don't usually support their use on the railway I'm sure the "rentathug" security company of GWR's preference can quickly supply security guards to chuck people off who window-hang.

Some high profile BTP patrols with those found ignoring the rules fined, ejected from the train and made a public example of would soon have an effect.

With the continuing disruption seeming to last into next week. Why can we send the HST from EMR into an Exeter to Reading shuttle. How long would any required training take? Of course you’d need extra staff for the doors and windows but this is a crisis so we need these back in service.

Disruption is going to go on for much longer than next week!
Worst case possibly 5 years, best maybe 2. All units will have to be repaired eventually. The disruption levels will depend on how many have to be withdrawn in the early stages before it's established what level of damage can be accepted to continue in service. One failure in service and it may well go to 5 years! Caution necessary for several weeks at least to ensure that doesn't happen.

I very much doubt it would go to 5 years because you could order a new fleet and get it on the rails in that time.

HST's to paddington are a potential solutiuon just nothing like a short term one
my thinking is GWR will only consider the massive task or re-training and derogations only if disruptions are set to be this bad for months not weeks
if we end up with rolling shortages of around 10 sets at a time i dont think it would be worth the hassle

Would Reading - Penzance via Berks be good enough. Single connection lots of options. Works on the east with some trains terminating at Peterborough during the KX building work.

5 years of potential disruptions worst case if a damaged unit ran and had a catastrophic failure in service causing all to be withdrawn. Whether new units were ordered or not the level of disruption would be greater if every unit had to be repaired before return to service. Going cautiously now to ensure the problem is fully understood and corrected is the right way to go.

How many units can be allowed to remain in service, how much work needs doing, where, how, and how quickly will determine how severe and long the disruption lasts. It may well have less severe side effects being felt a long way ahead.

I don't see withdrawn HSTs providing more than marginal help. Panic phase over. Calm preparations now under way.

Probably Plymouth would be fine.
