Could the opening of Cottam Parkway result in the closure of Salwick?

Has any official statement ever been made on the matter of Salwick when the new Cottam Parkway station opens?

Sankey for Penketh still has limited services since the new Warrington West station was opened.
I’ve not noticed anything as yet in the Blackpool Gazette

The station will not be in Cottam contrary to the station's name, however the link roads will be in Cottam and Lea respectively. The railway station will in fact be on the border between Savick and Lea Estates, and will in its current form provide no easy access to UCLAN Sports Arena despite its promising looking location. However, an alteration to the pathing and signage around Westleigh Conference Centre will mitigate this.

Looks like Salwick might be in trouble after all, it is mainly used for nuclear staff and job cuts are afoot at BNFL...

Union bosses have launched a scathing attack after plans to make up to 120 job losses were revealed at a nuclear fuel site near Preston.

It has been revealed that up to 120 redundancies are being planned at the Springfields nuclear fuel manufacturing facility to the west of the city at Salwick.

The site currently employs around 800 people and supports 4,000 further jobs across the wider supply chain.

Springfields - which is operated by Springfields Fuels Limited under the management of Westinghouse Electric UK Limited on 150-year lease - produces around one third of all low carbon energy generated in the United Kingdom.

If the passenger numbers decrease, then I presume that Salwick could be reduced to an extremely limited service

I doubt they would unless the plant closed, in which case the station should close as the plant is its only purpose.

The only other reason to close it (and run a shuttle bus from Cottam?) would be if it was too difficult to path the stops.

It is currently served by a 0647 to Preston , a 0743 to Blackpool South and a 1800 to Blackpool North. Think we have already reached "extremely limited" status

As others have said, you couldn't get more limited!

I will say that closing Salwick would not cause that much of a problem *as long as* buses are a viable alternative. Its stark how quickly and obviously urban Preston becomes rural Fylde, with all that that entails.

I envisage Preston Bus will be mandated to extend a service between Cottam Parkway and Salwick with integrated ticketing. What service that would be, if it even exists yet, is the conundrum, unless they are stripped of all West Preston services by 2022 (which is not unlikely)

Preston Bus is a commercial bus company owned by Rotala so can't be mandated to do anything or stripped of anything.

What is the residential population of Salwick and what bus services currently cover it?

Population 87, apparently. But that only tells you half the story - there's a large nuclear fuel plant right next to it, so despite its rural nature it's a traffic sink, not a traffic source.

If anything it's Lancashire's Capenhurst.

Edit: It has a usage of 1670 which seems to amount to about 4 people a day...a taxi from Cottam would do! :)

The nuclear site is called Springfield isn't it? Just like The Simpsons!
