Couldn't Complete Journey: Question

I am posting this on behalf of a friend of mine.
The story so far is: My friend attempted today to make a journey from Nottingham to Northampton to see his better half.
He got as far as Rugby to be told by staff there that he would be unable to complete his journey due to the OHLE issues at Wolverton causing massive delays.
The question that my friend has is where does he stand on this? Can he claim some form of compensation for not being able to finish his journey?
He plans to try again tomorrow, is is possible to claim 24 hours worth of delay repay?
He asked me these questions and I couldn't help him, so I am relaying them to you guys, because you are the experts.
