Coventry to Bolton

Looking to travel on Monday on off peak split tickets, as I understand it I can travel upto Preston and onto Bolton, or to Wigan and Walk between the two stations and a train onwards to Bolton. Ideally though I'd like to go via Manchester Picadilly and than a TPE to Bolton.

What's the best combination of tickets?

If you fancy going via Liverpool then a Coventry - Kirkby (Merseyside) off peak return is available at £19-69 in the LM Sale (on line only) and a day return from Kirkby - Bolton is £10
