Well what an amazing weekend it's been, a turn-up that couldn't have even been written about two months ago, and how the mighty have fallen in such a short space of time, Lancashire beat the County Champions Middlesex by 8 wickets!

Yessss!! Get in!!!

Wow! :o

At least the right decision was reached but it's a bit disappointing that the batsman was reportedly reluctant to walk. Whatever you views on walking in general I think if the stump's been uprooted (no matter the condition of the bails) the right thing to do is walk off at that point

If the stump is knocked back and not uprooted, that should be not out; on occasion the ball does hit the stump but doesn't remove the bail which is not out.

Anyone interested in the Champions Trophy? Some rather one-sided games so far in the main, with the rain never far away in most cases to make a mockery of the format. Given that South Africa are our opponents in all formats shortly, I've found their performances interesting. My only sight of the games has been the BBC highlights each evening, and the S.A. captain De Villiers seemed entirely uninterested in proceedings. I wonder whether he is ill, or has just reached the stage which some vg players do when their powers seem to wane almost overnight (Graeme Swann, Damien Martyn and Greg Blewett are examples that come to mind, Graham Gooch too)

Morgan, the England captain, now tries to lay the blame on the decision to play on used pitches in the later stages of the Champions Trophy whereas that ignores the fact that good fielding and bowling by Pakistan in the semi-final match reduced England to a meagre total of 211 all out from 49.5 overs.

Pakistan reached their winning total of 215-2 to win by eight wickets with almost 13 overs to spare.

England were put in, but Morgan admitted they would have batted first anyway. I've rarely seen a more one-sided game. Perhaps if Bairstow had not had to wait so long for a game he might have taken on the Pakistan bowlers at an early stage, but Pakistan were really excellent.

Simon Harmer finishes with match figures of 14-128, as Essex demolish Warwickshire by an innings and 164 runs to remain top of Division 1.
It was only four years ago that Essex were bowled out for 20 by Lancashire in a Championship match.

Day 4 at Old Trafford, after 1st innings of 395 by Hampshire and 593 by Lancashire, saw Hampshire unable to repeat their 1st innings batting performance and they were all out for 168 in their 2nd innings with Lancashire winning by an innings and 30 runs.

Anderson returned a good 2nd innings bowling spell of 15 - 5 - 20 - 4.

Anderson's figures were in stark contrast to Broad's for Notts - Notts demolished Leicestershire but no thanks to Broad. In the second innings he was brought on as second change for a couple of desultory overs.

And the good news continues for Essex, as Jamie Porter currently has figures of 15-5-41-3 on his England Lions debut, including two wickets in an over.

Henry Blofeld is to retire from TMS. Very sad news. No one is a descriptive or chaotic as he is! Who will tell us about pigeons or helicopters now?

On a railway forum it is also appropriate to note that, when commentating at Old Trafford in the old days (prior to the trams) he would also wax lyrical about the 'flyer'...the Chester - Manchester DMU that didn't stop at Warwick Road/Old Trafford.

Alistair Cook and Nick Browne set a record opening partnership for Essex, currently standing at 319 against county champions Middlesex, who were all out for 246.
Edit to add - this is Cook's third Championship ton this season, and is currently scoring a hundred per 3.5 innings.

Nick Browne must have an outside chance of making the team for the First Test v South Africa next week: Hameed of Lancs surely can't be picked in view of his travails this season. Another left-hander, but so what if Cook and Browne are seen to offer our best chance of a good start?

Blowers is brilliant.

"None of our seagulls this morning...always gorged themselves on worms...one over there...looking rather top-heavy."

Hope Yorkshire win the cricket this year! :D

I'd love to see Browne in, but have to agree he'd be an outside bet.
With the game heading for a draw, thanks to Nick Compton's 120, the loss of his wicket prompts a Middlesex collapse, with five wickets falling for ten runs in thirty minutes.
Simon Harmer does the damage again, finishing the 2nd innings with 9-95, giving him figures of 14-172 for the match.
That's 28 wickets in a week and 47 for the season so far!

A few close results, amongst the weather-disrupted games. Somerset almost managed another loss. but hung on grimly. Leics, of all teams, almost made the 394 they needed to win, losing by 2 runs, and my team, Kent, deservedly managed to draw, with 9 wickets down from the 12 batsmen they proffered, Sam Billings having to stand down mid-innings (and a good innings at that) overnight to represent England Lions against South Africa and Darren Stevens getting injured, again after scoring a few, and probably unable to resume his innings: as soon as Kent's ninth wicket fell, they were off for rain and never resumed.Phew!

Glad to see some form of Cricket matches returning to Free-To-Air , courtesy of the BBC . Sky have been disastrous , with slumping viewership and reduced grassroots interest

ICC Womens World Cup

West Indies Women.....48 all out
Only one person reached double figures.
van Niekerk returned the amazing bowling return of 3.2 - 3 - 0 - 4

South Africa Women....51 - 0 (6.2 overs)

About as comprehensive a victory you could achieve in a World Cup fixture.

The pay dispute has taken an ugly turn. The Australian A tour of South Africa has been cancelled.
The absence of a new Memorandum of Understanding has led to the development tour to cease

The proposed Australia A tour to South Africa, due to start next week, will not go ahead, with the Australian Cricketers' Association announcing today that the players have chosen not take part as a result of the ongoing stalemate over a new Memorandum of Understanding.

The ACA released a statement confirming an earlier resolution passed at a meeting of the ACA executive last weekend that players would not agree to tour unless an MOU "on fair terms" was in place, and while any out-of-contract players thus remained unemployed.

England's first innings performance today was a cameo of Lancashire's performances this season. Looking forward to 5 days at Old Trafford at the start of next month.

Hameed couldn't be blamed for this one! Jennings now has three innings of scores between 0 and 8 out of five, although of course he had a century in his first test innings. Boycott was hinting in his newspaper column this morning that just because a batsman scores a century in his first test doesn't necessarily imply they have a great test future in front of them, citing John Hampshire (Yorks) and Frank Hayes (Lancs) as examples. Perhaps more pertinently, both Boycott and Michael Vaughan wrote that Gary Ballance wasn't a no. 3 but a no. 5, where he's been scoring a ton of runs for Yorks this season. The same mistake was made before! Anyway, all praise to the marvellous Joe Root, our own Virat Kohli, not forgetting his great mate Ben Stokes and the ever-useful Mooen Ali.

Indeed - Hameed especially but Buttler and Davies have had some very poor starts. Chanderpaul has been the saving grace. A very similar story now for England with the middle order doing the majority of the work. A great start for Root - though just heard he's off for 190, caught behind.

The morning session of the 4th day of the Test Match saw England move from 139-1 to 182-8. Shades of past deeds in Australia.<(

However, every cloud has a silver lining and the England 2nd innings moved on to 233 all out,

South Africa had a disastrous start to their 2nd innings, losing four wickets for less than 30 on the board and wickets continued to fall on a regular basis on a wicket taking spin and they were all out for 119, Moeen returning the excellent figures of 15-4-53-6.

England won by 211 runs, with a day to spare.

And it will happen again............provided we have a cricket team come November.

The Aussie cricket authorities seem to be determined to follow the example of those in the various countries of the West Indies, arguably with far less financial reason, and destroy their test team.
