My son is crazy about Class 220s, the Cross Country Voyager ... and we've just bought one for his model railway (after months of saving). I know the actual CCV's run through the New Forest but does anyone have any advice on how I can understand the timetables to take a trip on one? This would be a big treat for him!

Basically any train marked XC in the timetable will be a 220 or 221, not sure if the 220s are allocated differently to the 221s though.

As Matt says, every Cross Country service through the New Forest area will be a Voyager (i.e. all direct services between Newcastle/Manchester/Birmingham and Reading/ Southampton/ Bournemouth).

The only non-Voyager services they run are Nottingham - Cardiff (Class 170), Birmingham - Stansted (Class 170) and a handful of Dundee - Plymouth services which are HST run (identified in this thread http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=54341 - the majority of services on that route are Voyagers though).

Hope your lad enjoys the model set - look forward to doing the same in a couple of years myself :)

Generally it has been my experince that the Class 220's are mostly used on the Bournemouth/Southampton/Readimg to Birmingham/Manchester services with the 221's being used on the service to Newcastle and I think the 221's are also used on the services from Plymouth alongside the HSTS.

It's been said by others on this forum, and it is my observation too, that the Southampton/Reading to Newcastle services are predominantly worked by 220s. Apparently they were all booked for 220s up until recently, although there hasn't been much change anyway. 221s seem to get concentrated on the South West services: Principally the ones to Edinburgh, but also the Manchester services as well. The Bournemouth to Manchester services seem to be a fair mix of 220s and 221s.

MAN-BMH needs 34 units and the rest of XCs network (bar 170 routes) needs 27ish?!

CrossCountry departures from Bournemouth are 07:30 (07:49 from Brockenhurst) and then hourly from 08:45 - 19:45 (09:00 - 20:00 from Brockenhurst). The return services arrive back at Bournemouth beteen xx:10 and xx:12.

I hope he isn't dissapointed as they look much better from the outside than they do when you are on them.

Just stating what I have seen when I have been at Reading station, which is other than the service to Newcastle, all the other services where run by Class 220's.

I would probably suggest that the most reliable route for 221s is Bristol to Manchester, and the most reliable for 220s is Bournemouth to Manchester. Just my personal belief though, having travelled on numerous BRI-MANs and seen numerous BMH-MANs.

The Bournemouth-Manchester and Bristol-Manchester trains interwork so a 221 coming from Bristol then goes to Bournemouth and vice versa.

Thanks people. Voyagers don't seem to have much of a following among long-term ferroequinologists but they're a good-looking train, and I've seen how that's encouraging the next generation!

Out of interest, does it have to be a CrossCountry Voyager in your son's eyes? Cos I would suggest that Virgin Voyagers are better...

Well, given that the OP said they're in New Forest, I'd say that it'll probably have to be XC unless they want to go to London or Birmingham to get a Virgin one

Which don't look that much different to the Voyagers. Except for slightly different bogie designs and an extra coach ;)

Ever since tilt was removed from XC's 221s, they have referred to both 221s and 220s as voyagers, so I assume that is what the OP is talking about.

Many thanks for all your help arranging this trip. My son and I had an enjoyable trip - and even managed to ride on 221 141 - which was a treat (if you know your Voyager's you'll know why)!

Is it because it was 141s last day at work before being scrapped?!!<D
