The PTE's always seemed to make it awkward to tack on one of their area tickets to those of a neighbouring PTE to enable freedom of movement in and between adjoining PTE areas (am thinking Merseyside, Gtr Manchester, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire as the others do not adjoin). It usually entails buying a single between two boundary stations to 'bridge the gap' and travelling on trains that call at those stations.
What are the best options that give the flexibility of Saveaway, Wayfarer, Metro Rovers and whatever the S Yorks one is these days, with the ability to cross the boundaries between the PTE areas ?

If you're talking on a day basis, combining a Wayfarer with a Saveaway (area A or All area) allows you to travel between Manchester and Liverpool via Chat Moss (including the fast services) without the need for another ticket (the zones overlap between Newton and Earlestown)

this thread deals in depth with bridging the gap between Merseytravel and TfGM areas.

Are you specifically looking at W Yorks and S Yorks?

NWM has a range of "out of county" rail products but doesn't neighbour any other PTE area.

Was actually thinking more of Liverpool - Leeds and Leeds - Sheffield with the added capability of break of journey at points in the Greater Manchester area.

South/West Yorks is absolutely fine! South Elmsall [[stn]SES[/stn]] and Moorthorpe [[stn]MRP[/stn]] are both in West Yorkshire but South Yorkshire PTE tickets are valid at them both. Similarly, Darton [[stn]DRT[/stn]] is in South Yorkshire but West Yoirkshire Metro tickets are valid there.

There's no expensive gap, unlike Marsden-Greenfield.

Actually, some of us worked out a cheap way of crossing the Pennines, but we could not possibly post it somewhere where certain people (e.g. ATOC) could find out! ;) We can reveal it at Fares workshops though, as well as explaining why it's valid. It's a fairly recent discovery.

I think you're going to have to be more specific, are you looking for rail only tickets, day or longer term tickets, are there certain places you want to go within each PTE area?

We could be here all day listing every possible combination otherwise.

Both South and West Yorkshire tickets are valid to the boundary stations of Darton, Denby Dale, Moorthorpe and South Elmsall so there's no need to buy a ticket to bridge the gap. Only works on the trains though AFAIK there's no similar arrangement on buses.

South and West Yorkshire PTEs have common boundary stations at ...
SOUTH ELMSALL on Doncaster to Leeds line
MOORTHORPE on Sheffield to Leeds via Dearne line
DARTON on Barnsley to Wakefield Kirkgate line
DENBY DALE on Barnsley to Huddersfield line.

South Yorkshire One Day Travel Master ticket covers buses, tram and trains (to the above stations). West Yorkshire Day Rover, train only or bus and train (to above stations). See the respective PTE websites on advance purchase of 'scratch off' versions of the tickets. SY tickets can be purchased at PTE Travel Centres ( Sheffield interchange, Rotherham Interchange, Meadowhall Interchange, Doncaster Interchange) but I don't think you can buy them at stations. You cannot buy them on trains, trams or buses. There is also a SY Daytripper ticket that can be purchased from bus drivers and is valid on trains after 09.30 (m-F).

West Yorkshire Day Rovers can be bought at stations in WY, bus stations and at Post Offices (if there any still open!). Train Day Rovers can be bought from conductors on Northern trains.

Cross border journey trips can only be made on Northern services as these stop at boundary station (WY condition) and not sure about Leeds - Sheffield (&Nottingham) semi fast services. Only WY ticket valid on East Coast and only between Wakefield and Leeds and as far as Keighley / Horsforth.
On XC only valid Sheffield - Doncaster, or Wakefield - Leeds, but NOT from SY to WY or return!

Latest info on websites.

Cross border bus travel using both tickets is straight forward as all "border crossings" are at the location where the route passes from SY into WY or v.v.

Fairly comprehensive, but I'll just add a couple of bits...

And to Bradford Forster Square :D

There's even a ticket valid on the buses in both West and South Yorkshire - the MetroMaster. Not the cheapest of tickets (£106 a month) but it ahs the same bus validity as a Metrocard and a TravelMaster.

Cross boarder bus travel is easier generally - I travelled over the West Yorks / GM border with a pass for each side for 3 months buck in 1993. Got some funny looks from drivers as I had a pass in each hand but no queries.

The idea is actually to make an out and back journey somethng along the lines of Liverpool > Leeds direct, then Leeds > Sheffield but then meandering back at will utilising bus and rail.
From what has been mentioned so far and with Brompton rails's concise summary the only bugbears are the Marsden-Greenfield bit and choice of train between Sheffield and Leeds.

Thanks for the info.

If you're brave, I'd like to see someone get on TPX with both the GM system one ticket and map and the WY metrocard ticket and map, and point to the highlighted area between greenfield and the county boundary and between the county boundary and marsden, together with NRCOC clause 19 'zonal tickets'
