Crossrail state they will run 24 trains per hour when opened, so how many drivers will they need and when will they need to start recruiting?

Wow your a bit early for that yet! Lol I would think that when Crossrail is completed and a franchise is awarded for it, the relevant TOC will prob advertise for qualified drivers first. But that is just a guess there. The question of how many drivers they will need, that depends on how many diagrams there are at each depot to be covered each day! I know a lot of the drivers on GA will go to cross rail as Gidea Park depot will probably be absorbed by Crossrail and there are quite a lot of drivers at GP! Plus a lot of drivers from other depots are planning on applying for it when it starts up.

Drivers? Surely they won't need any in the future when Crossrail opens? My computer can get a train through a single line tunnel, easy. ;)

Most of the drivers are coming from gidea park on the east and Paddington on the west side. Won't need to recruit many many drivers I shouldn't think although I know some at Paddington are not particularly thrilled by the prospect.

As much as I hate to say it, I doubt there will be guards on Crossrail trains. I would imagine it would be a DOO service with a 'on-board manager'.

Not planned so far. Maybe a lot of folk transferring but certainly not down to be amalgamated. Paddington TV and Gidea Park are the 2 down for transfer.

I doubt it'll even have that. It's an over-grown tube line that'll have manned stations throughout

So you may well expect a mahoosove increase in the number of staff on the stations while operating to an LUesque standard...?

Waterloo & City is worked by Central Line drivers so not such a bore as it seems.

The more staff you have, the better the service you will run

...within reason, perhaps. But I really can't envisage Crossrail having more than one member of staff (ie the driver) onboard.

With the current operations, I the Shenfield GE services are DOO aren't they? What about Heathrow Connect, Express and the FGW Thames valley services that Crossrail will take over?

The Heathrow Connect does employ On Board Attendants who provide customer service and revenue protection, and its no coincidence that these trains look a lot neater and tidier than those without, so maybe its something Crossrail should consider.

IIRC the only LOROL services without guards are ELL and Watford DC lines. NLL and Clapham - Willesden shuttle services all have guards on.

So it's a new line connecting and replacing existing DOO operations, running as a high frequency "metro"- if I owned property, I'd confidently stake it on Crossraill being DOO with roaming revenue protection staff.

Ilford is getting half of a re-vamp. The 'B shop' is getting knocked down to make way for new sidings just for crossrail, there will be new signalling within the depot as well as new offices to accomodate staff. But the depot will techncally be split in two.

With all this in mind, it is no suprise that as there will be a shortlisting of vacancies for crossrail for ilford drivers. Gidea Park will be entrirely going to crossrail, however those drivers not looking to change companies have the option of transfering to Ilford to work under whatever GE franchise will be then.

That sounds a fair bet to me - all of these DOO lines seem to operate pretty safely under their current set-up
