Horley Station platform one (the up slow) has a curious object mounted firmly on a concrete block and surrounded by low railings.

Obviously the base for something heavy. The padlocked cabinet in the background suggest electricity was involved. Might it have been part of a crane or jib to do with the traveling post office for offering or collecting mail bags as the train roared past?

Isn't that the support for the DOO monitors (since removed).

See this picture found on the internet, looking at the tracks through platform 1 and 2 and showing DOO monitors on platform 1 under the bridge.

Fair enough. Must have been for short trains. That's roughly the middle of the platform.

Correct, that was where the 4 car stop was, which was the norm at Horley up until a few years ago
