Czech transport is expected to further reduce its traffic performance from midnight from Friday to Saturday due to the announcement of an emergency. The Czech Republic will temporarily lose all international trains and buses.

This stems from the government's decision. “In the framework of the declared state of emergency, the Government, on the proposal of the Minister of Transport Karel Havlíček, banned all carriers in international passenger road, rail and water transport to carry passengers across the Czech Republic border. Czechs are allowed to return to the country or foreigners are allowed to leave the Czech Republic, ”said the Ministry of Transport.

Czech Railways announced the end of all international connections on twitter, while other carriers are preparing details for their measures. “From Friday midnight we cancel international transport. The trains will run across the state border and then return. All international tickets can be returned free of charge, ” said České dráhy on twitter. International trains also stop GW Train Regio and Die Länderbahn.

According to today's government decision, Czechs are not allowed to travel, for example, to Germany or Austria, nor must citizens from these countries. The Minister of the Interior Jan Hamacek will issue an exception in a matter of hours for Czechs working on the Austrian or German side of the border in order to cross the border for work.

Slovakia will also close for Czechs, according to the government there will be only people with permanent or temporary residence in Slovakia.

GW Train Regio stops trains to Germany tonight. Upon arrival of the last train from Germany to Kraslice, international passenger transport to and from Germany will be suspended until further notice. “ All trains from Sokolov will end in Kraslice and from there will also be dispatched back to the inland. Cross-border transport will be stopped until further notice, ”said Pavel Faugner, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

In the case of rail transport, it is not yet clear whether trains that do not start or end in the Czech Republic, but only cross the territory. The fate of traffic on the piste route across Poland between Liberec and Varnsdorf is also unclear. "We are dealing with various options how to deal with the ban, today will definitely decide, " said Die Länderbahn executive Michal Barták. It is certain that trains from the Czech Republic will not stop in Zittau, Germany.

A document from the Ministry of Transport to ban cross-border public transport

From Saturday, people can only travel abroad by car, cross-border passenger bus, train or boat traffic is suspended. International measures will also affect international passenger air transport.

The government has banned the transport of passengers across the border of the Czech Republic on the proposal of the Minister of Transport Karel Havlíček in the framework of the declared state of emergency. Czechs are allowed to return to the country or foreigners are allowed to leave the Czech Republic.
The prohibition on road transport concerns passenger regular and occasional services provided by vehicles of more than 9 persons, and for rail and water transport it applies to all international trains or ships in passenger transport.

The government also banned the use of airports other than Václav Havel International Public Airport Prague (Prague / Ruzyně, LKPR) as part of commercial air transport with passengers on board, crossing the border of the Czech Republic.

The government allows citizens to return to the Czech Republic

As part of the crisis measure, the government allows vehicles over 9 persons to return to the Czech Republic who are heading back to the Czech Republic. Similarly, foreigners will be allowed to leave the Czech Republic.

Transporters engaged in international road passenger transport based in the Czech Republic as well as carriers based outside the Czech Republic are allowed to transport empty buses without passengers to or outside the Czech Republic.

Similarly, the Government allows carriers in international rail passenger transport based in the Czech Republic as well as carriers established outside the Czech Republic to transport empty trains without passengers to or outside the Czech Republic.

Carriers operating in cross-border inland waterway passenger transport based in the Czech Republic, as well as carriers established outside the Czech Republic, are allowed to transport empty vessels without passengers to or outside the Czech Republic.

(Article translated from Czech)

České dráhy have taken the decision to ban entry to citizens from various countries affected by coronavirus and suspend all international rail connections, instead turning them around before the border.

This pretty much shuts down international rail traffic in Central Europe, as most trains transit the Czech Republic. (Warsaw-Budapest, Berlin-Vienna, etc.)

Thalys has reduced it service. I guess we will see major damage to the travel industry as a whole.
Thomas Cook might be followed by others soon. :(

My worry is how many of these border closures & restrictions in Central Europe are their more nationalistic governments taking a chance to do what they always wanted to do anyway - so how many of these really are temporary :(

Which did you have in mind? Many of these are absolutely packed, and run frequently.

Which did you have in mind? Assuming you are referring to the trains, I can't think of a frequent, absolutely packed, cross-border service in Central (not Western) Europe; Switzerland would be another matter altogether.

They are EU and (some of them) Schengen countries, so unless they leave those two things they can't. You can only suspend Schengen temporarily.

The Prague-Brno-Vienna-Graz Railjet service is busy and fairly frequent, and is important on both sides of the border, let alone across it.
The resourcing is shared between ČD and ÖBB.
I imagine it will be quite a blow to lose that connectivity.
Presumably it will become two separate shuttles.

As with the Trump Schengen travel ban, it's complicated.
The ban is on individuals, not on the trains.
Czechs can still return home over the border, and foreigners may still leave.
It talks about special arrangements for people who work across the border.
It's also unclear what happens to transit trains/passengers (eg Vienna-Prague-Dresden or Budapest-Ostrava-Warsaw)

Yes. According to the OeBB website the services are cancelled only between Breclav and Wien, ditto the Graz-Przemszyl and the Berlin etc sleeper. There's no mention of the Wien-Warsaw services but I assume they are also cancelled across the border (PKP stock). All cross border sections of regional trains are cancelled, ditto Linz-Prague.

As I posted on the general Coro thread:
From the Czech government web-site, all cross-border train and bus services are being suspended:
https://www.vlada.cz/en/media-centr...ransport-will-take-effect-on-saturday-180270/

This on the visit Prague web-site (my highlighting) https://www.prague.eu/en:
On 12 March, the Czech government has declared a 30-day state of emergency, closing all pubs and restaurants from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and banning all events with more than 30 people. Most monuments, museums, galleries, cinemas, and cultural institutions are closed.------------PLEASE NOTE:------------- Citizens of Austria, Belgium, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK will not be admitted from midnight on Friday, with the exception of those with permanent or long-term residence in the Czech Republic. Border controls will also be tightened from midnight on Friday. All international bus and train connections will be suspended. Stay safe and healthy and visit us in better times!

There's quite a lot of Vienna-Bratislava commuting these days. Not sure what's happening there.
Cross-border trains all cancelled.
And Austrian govt has also instructed OeBB to suspend traffic to Switzerland.
Leaves only Germany (not sure about Croatia/Slovenia)

And from 12:00 today, Saturday 14 April, Denmark will close the borders with Germany and Sweden. SJ trains to Copenhagen will not travel beyond Malmö. Danish citizens and documented foreigners will be permitted, so I’m assuming Öresundståg trains will continue, perhaps with a skeleton service over the bridge.

There are already far fewer international passenger trains than even 20 years ago, but I suspect that many of those that have survived until now will not be reinstated even after the Covid-19 pandemic finally ends (which could be years not months).

There are far fewer traditional multi-portion very-long-distance trains, true.
I suspect services down towards the Balkans are medium-term much more vulnerable than the regular-interval ones in West/Central Europe. Not sure about the Sud Express to Lisbon either.

A lot fewer very long-distance; a huge number more medium-distance and cross-border commuter services, though. Especially across the former Iron Curtain.

Glad I did Budapest Nyugati Palyaudvar-Praha Hlavní Nadrazí on Tuesday while the going was still okay. I flew Prague to Manchester late Tuesday evening. Even on Tuesday the train was no more than a quarter full, though the flight was around 90% seats occupied. Stay safe everybody!

There are substantially fewer cross border services in Eastern Europe than previously, particularly where new borders have been erected since 1945/1989. One example is the former Saint Petersburg–Warsaw Railway, which has been abandoned completely between Grodno and Lithuania.
There are only 3 daily direct trains (non-express) between Berlin (from the suburban station Gesundbrunnen) and Stettin (now Szczecin), and no direct trains from Berlin or Dresden to Breslau (now Wrocław).

14:15 Germany's borders to Austria, Switzerland, and France will be closed starting Monday morning in a bid to stem the spread of the coronavirus, according to the Spiegel magazine and the mass-circulation Bild newspaper. However, German authorities will keep the crossing open for commuters as well as the delivery of goods.

There was no immediate information on the possible closure of other border crossings, including those towards Poland, Denmark, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.

EDIT: ARD TV now reporting that borders with Denmark and Luxembourg will also close from 8am local time tomorrow (in German): https://www.tagesschau.de/inland/corona-grenzschliessung-deutschland-101.html
