I have heard there are extra trains between Newton Abbot Dawlish and Exeter on Saturday for Dawlish air show. They are also strengthening other trains. Any idea what will be used and were the stock is coming from?

Timed for HST according to RTT. Stock originates from Laira so makes sense.

Also ECS move from Reading to Exeter so would appear 150001 and/or 150002 may be coming to help out.

Ah ok. Do you know if the normal services are been strengthened. I notice most trains are shuttling Paignton to Exeter St Davids and not running to Exmouth. I notice there is a empty stock movement from St Philip's Marsh as well.

The trains will be as long as the platforms will allow, there is nothing more FGW can do.

The reason for splitting the Paignton to Exmouth services at Exeter st Davids is because of the shorter platforms on the Exmouth branch compared to the Paignton line.

Well HSTs stop at all stations between St Davids and Paignton and we also have a 6 car school day diagram from Exeter to Paignton so im guessing all services can be strengthened.

Always works well along this stretch of line with all operators helping out. Best I've seen was VXC, FGW, Wessex & SWT. Especially during the eclipse. The South West could teach many how to run a railway.

HSTs have SDO, the West units don't, the 6 car stop board is very specific in the stock it relates to!

I know (no guessing involved) that 6 coach 150 wont fit!

Is the 158 still down there (I noticed there has been one down for the Dawlish Carnival the other week)?

I wonder if there will be any 6 car Pacer services (used to be booked for the afternoon school train service, and return)

Only down and back the same day.

They'll have their own Saturday working to do on the Metro. The afternoon 6 Car is booked 2x143 + 150

I don't think that is the reason, a terminating Paignton to Exeter service goes into New Yard and then forms the next Exmouth service. Makes sense that this allows for any delays and stop them snowballing along the Exmouth line. This was not as much of an issue in past years as the timetable allowed more time at Exeter St Davids, but now Newcourt has opened the timetable has changed with trains leaving at Exmouth from Paignton at xx16, instead of xx18.

Is the airshow just Saturday or Sunday too?

Hi, Its interesting you state that SDO is not used on DMUs in the West. However on School days the 15:57 arrival in to Paignton from Exmouth and 16:12 departure from Paignton are 6 coach trains. Admittedly the 6 coaches on the 16:12 only go as far as Exeter St Davids.
That train stops at all stations.

My second point is that when travelling from Exeter to Exmouth. Quite often only the front door of the front coach is open at St James Park. That has to be SDO doesn't it?

    Just Saturday.

The 6 coach is 2x143s and 1x150 from and to St Davids only, the only other 6 coach formation allowed on that route is 3x143, any other 6 coach formation is too long for a few platforms.

For your second point, no that Is Local Door Operation.

Hi all, my intro post as there isn`t an intro page from what I can see.
Sadly, the weather isn`t looking too good at the moment which will be a shame as I intended to go. Usually a good little airshow though. Hope I`m wrong about the weather.

The Vulcan visit hit it's funding target, so it's going to be even busier:D

6-car trains do not go to Exmouth. The term-time 6-car only runs between Exeter St. Davids and Paignton. Whilst it fits at all stations, it is only due to the specific composition of the formation (143+143+150) that it fits at Exeter St. Thomas.

Units stopping at St. James Park do not use Selective Door Operation. If the length of the train exceeds the platform length then Local Door Only operation in the leading carriage is used.

Interestingly some trains that would normally stop at Exeter St Thomas are not stopping there this Saturday.

The Vulcan is always a crowd puller and more so this year as it`s her last.

that's because of the crowding/delay problems last year, passengers wouldn't let the Paignton unit leave so the HST crowd buster was stuck in St Davids, yes FGW have learned their lesson!

The 5 coach 150 lash up is rumoured* to be a 7 coach now!

    * we all know how the railway runs on rumours!

The 150 is attached to the 14.23 Exmouth - Paignton at St David's, having worked down ecs from Bristol.

On a Saturday during the school holidays?
I didn't know that, especially as the 150s are only running a special extra service for the airshow, I wonder what Mike is forming up in the morning then as there is a special ECS move from Reading tonight.

No - Mon - Fri only. I assume it still works in holidays as the 150 then works an Exeter Central - Paignton train before returning to Bristol.

    You assume incorrectly!
I know what the 150 does, I attach/detach and drive the bloody thing often enough!

What has any of this got to do with the extra train services for Dawlish airshow this Saturday?

    Edit-

150002 on its way to Exeter as 5Z50-

150002 is on an ordinary triangle diagram starting with the 0915 Exeter st David's to Exmouth then to Barnstaple , the shuttle is 5 coaches not 7 with 150926 and 150261.

Sorry slightly off topic, re: 150002 is this unit (and 001) being former prototypes, regarded the same as the rest of the 150 fleet or do drivers require a separate course on them? thanks.

Dawlish Cam is going to be good today, trains and planes. There is also a cam installation for the airshow, way up high and looking out over Dawlish station.
